Welcome to Mililani High AVID
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is an internationally recognized college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll and persist in four-year colleges and universities. AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other post-secondary opportunities.
Students in the AVID elective learn peer collaboration skills, questioning strategies, goal setting, motivation through guest speakers and field trips, organizational habits, and the Cornell note-taking method. Socratic based study groups are also an integral part of the learning process and to support students as they take on Pre-AP/AP level classes.
WICOR is the foundation of AVID
WICOR is an acronym for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading and provides a learning model that educators can use to guide students in comprehending concepts and articulating ideas at increasingly complex levels. Within WICOR are variety of teaching strategies essential to student learning and work well in all types of classrooms.
COSTA'S LEVELS OF QUESTIONS
To better understand the content being presented in their core subject areas, it is essential for students to learn to think critically and to ask higher levels of questions. By asking higher levels of questions, students deepen their knowledge and create connections to the material being presented.
ORGANIZATION & WRITING:
MARKING THE TEXT Strategy
