Students will enroll in a Study Skills course during their Sophomore year. This course will help support students throughout their early college journey by focusing on study skills and strategies that can be applied to any class they take during their academic journey. Students will also focus on developing college and career readiness skills like communication, time management, and project planning. This will help students be successful when they begin to take early college courses.
At this point in time, class of 2027 students will be offered SP 151 as a summer opportunity. Students will also be taking IS 103 in the Fall semester and we are also offering HIST 152 in the Spring (which counts as a World History High School credit). Discussions and updates will be provided as students continue on their Journey to Leeward. Early College course offerings are meant to provide students with a head start towards a college degree. Whether it be a Certificate, Associates, or a Bachelors, we will do our best to offer early college courses that are relevant and applicable towards post-secondary degrees.
As part of this journey, we hope to offer students 8-11 early college course opportunities, which means that students will have the opportunity to earn 24-33 college credits by the time they graduate from high school. The intent of this program is to offer courses that meet pre-requisite requirements within the University of Hawaii system. Although these credits are transferable to other colleges and universities, the program was designed for students who are planning to enter the University of Hawaii system schools (including community colleges). Students will go through a counseling process to determine which courses are most useful for their post-secondary plans and we hope to offer courses that are relevant to students' potential degree. As you browse the sample course offerings, please keep in mind that this is an example only. Course offerings will depend on student needs and course availability at the time.
The Journey to Leeward is not a part of the normal registration process. If new students are interested in this opportunity, registration will be through the Journey to Leeward coordinator. MHS will make necessary course changes for students during the Spring Semester. Students who were already enrolled in the Journey to Leeward Program were pre-registered during our registration process.
