APRIL HOMEWORK
Students have two big projects to work on for the month of April.
#1- Family Heirloom Project- As part of this unit, we are asking the children to discover their own history. We would like your child to bring in something to share about his or her heritage with the class. Some ideas could be; photo of a relative from the past (grandparents or later), clothing from a time gone by, an example of your family tree, any item that has been passed down in your family, or anything that you and your child feel would let us know a little more about your family history and where you came from. Many times parents practice the presentation with their child and help their child write down key information on index cards or paper so the child can have the information available to them when they present it to the class. Please keep the share to one item so we can really understand its significance. A calendar was sent home with your child's presentation date.
#2- Family Tree or Family Crest
Please refer to the handouts and grading rubric that was sent home with your child for these two projects.
IMMIGRATION UNIT
Please check your child's take-home folder regarding our unit on Immigration and Cultures. Your child will be participating in a variety of activities that will enable them to learn about, and better understand, our ancestors' journeys from various homelands around the world through Ellis Island and other cities. Our culminating activity, Ellis Island Day, will be held on Thursday, April 23rd. Please see handout for more details.
Math- We are working through our 5th Module in math. The focus of this unit is fractions as numbers. Students will learn how to partition a whole into equal parts, write fractions in a variety of forms, understand how unit fractions relate to the whole, represent and locate fractions on a numberline, compare fractions, and find equivalent fractions.
Phonics- We are currently in Lesson 14 of our 95% phonics program. The focus of this unit is to identify, read, and write multisyllable words that follow the open syllable pattern.
Writing- This month in writing, third graders are focusing on opinion writing! Students are learning how to clearly state their opinion, give strong reasons to support it, and include examples to convince their readers. We are practicing organizing our ideas with an introduction, supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion. Ask your child about the topics they’ve been writing about—they’re becoming great persuasive writers!
Social Studies- We are continuing to learn about Ellis Island and are starting to focus on what countries many immigrants came from and the reasons they left to come to America. We are currently working on a flipbook with this information.
As a culminating activity, we will be having an Ellis Island Day. This will take place on Thursday,April 23th. Each child will need to select one nation of ancestry for that day. They will come dressed as immigrants and go through a mock Ellis Island immigration experience from the 1900s. We will need volunteers to help us on that day. All of the information about Ellis Island Day has been sent home! Please make sure to send back the form if you would like to volunteer on Ellis Island Day.
