Most people don’t know at the age of 13 what they want to do as a career, but you can think about what you enjoy, what you are good at, and why.
The Welsh Government recognises that career decisions must not be made too early, and has therefore made some subjects compulsory because they provide you with the skills you will need in all walks of life and they enable you to keep all your options open for the future.
Some of these compulsory subjects lead to a full GCSE qualification e.g.:
English Language and Literature 2 GCSEs 8 lessons per fortnight
Mathematics and Numeracy 2 GCSEs 8 lessons per fortnight
Science (Double Award) 2 GCSEs 9 lessons per fortnight
Others are included to ensure a balanced and rounded education for the future citizens of our country:-
Core Cymraeg 1 GCSE 4 lessons per fortnight
Welsh Baccalaureate 3 lessons per fortnight
Games No exam 3 lessons per fortnight
Optional Subjects (x3) 5 lessons per fortnight per option block
All pupils will study the Welsh Baccalaureate. This is a key indicator of successful study for the Welsh Government and many employers.
