School attendance is critical to our students' success. Attendance is tracked daily and monitored closely. When a student has missed 3, 7, & 10 days of school, Texas law requires that we notify the parrent. Therefore, when a student reaches 3, 7 , & 10 absences, the parent will receive a letter from Park Hill on behalf of Midway ISD.
TARDIES
Students must be in the classroom by 7:40 AM each day. Students who enter the building after the sound of the bell (7:40 AM) are tardy. Students entering the building late will receive a tardy ticket to give to the teacher. The late arrival will be documented by the classroom teacher and reported on the 6-weeks report card.
At 7:40 AM, the back entry where students enter each morning, will be secured. All students must enter through our front office vestibule after the doors close. The student will be given a tardy ticket upon entering the building, which he/she will then give to the teacher to document. Parents should call the office to report a late student and the reason for being tardy.
Students who are continuoulsy tardy (after 7:40 AM) and/or have several records of early check-outs (prior to 3:10 PM) will be referred to the attendance committee. It is important to your child's education that he/she is at school each day, on time, and present for the duration of the school day.
MEDICAL VISITS
Medical absences are excused if a note from the healthcare provider accompanies the student upon their return to school. Notes from healthcare providers may only be accepted for up to 5 days after the child's appointment. Please consider scheduling appointments after dismissal time (3:10 PM).
Medical notes can be faxed to (254)853-4860 or sent to school. Please have your child give the note to his/her teacher. All medical notes will be recorded and stored in our nurse’s office.
Medical notes from health care providers must be submitted to our school nurse,
Melissa Compton, to excuse a student from physical education (P.E.) classes. The note must be written by a doctor and state the length of time needed for the student to have limited or no activity during PE. The note must also state the reason for modified activity. Please remember that students are required to have physical education (PE) classes in the state of Texas.
ABSENCES
Absences must be reported to our office daily:
To report an absence, please call (254) 761-5770 each day the student misses school. Listen to the prompt, and then press #1 on your keypad. Be sure to state the child’s name, grade level, teacher’s name and your name, as well as the reason for the absence.
A parent-signed note should be provided to the campus when the student returns from an absence, which should state the reason for missing school.
If a doctor has ordered an absence from school, you may state the length of absence in one phone call by giving the dates that the child will not be present at school.
Any absence for 3 or more days will require a doctor’s note, which should be provided within 3 days once the student returns to school.
All partial-day absences due to medical appointments, must have a doctor’s note to excuse them.
Medical facilities and/or offices may email or fax the doctor’s note to our office directly.
Excused Absences - Any absence that is allowable under the state’s compulsory attendance laws and
any absence that complies with the district’s documentation requirements.
Unexcused Absences - Any absence that is not allowed under the state’s compulsory laws.
ABSENT WORK
Homework will be available for pick-up at school after three consecutive absences.
Please contact your child's teacher via email to receive work on the student’s third consecutive absence. A request for the student’s work should be submitted in writing prior to 8:15 AM to receive it the same day. The pick-up time for make-up work is between 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM. If the request to receive make-up work was given after 8:15 AM, then the work will be available for pick-up after 2:30 PM the next day. A reasonable time will be allowed for students to make up their work.
Students going on non-emergency trips or vacations may be allowed to do “make-up work.” However, the principal must be notified, in writing, in advance of the trip. This will allow the teacher time to assemble assignments for the student to do either in advance of the trip or while on the trip. In such a case, the work is due on the first day the student returns to school and the teacher will determine grades. The absences will be unexcused and could result in truancy issues.
