Independent Study
Independent Study
Course Description:
Students who have taken the highest possible level of a course in the building and who wish to continue with their studies can work out an independent study with a teacher (where there is already an existing base curriculum). This self-directed learning opportunity allows the teacher to act as a guide or facilitator for a specific curricular area while the student plays a more active role in designing and managing his or her own learning. Students are able to complete some of their credit requirements through individual study and research. A student and his or her independent study teacher agree in advance on the topic and approach of the study program and meet regularly to discuss the student’s progress. Independent study students will report to class when the teacher has the highest level of the existing course scheduled. Students create a final product for presentation at the end of the study.
Students will receive credit for the class, but the class will be Pass/Fail. The Independent Study course will not be included in rank or GPA calculation. Independent studies will not carry any extra added value because it will only be graded Pass/Fail and will not be included in rank or GPA.
