Career & Consumer Science Courses

9th Grade Seminar  (offered to all first semester freshmen)

9th Grade Seminar is  designed to ease the transition to a new building and academic setting. This program also provides the opportunity for students to address the issues of personal development that all adolescents face through these important four years. The goal of the course is to provide a solid foundation and sense of community that will enhance the academic and personal success for all students. Students learn about the various courses, extracurricular activities, and resources available to them at the high school level. A special focus is placed on students’ social-emotional learning and mental health, as well as the development of citizenship skills (local, national, global, and digital.) Students have the opportunity to explore topics of interest to them and begin making connections to future coursework, colleges, and careers. Students also learn to identify bias, prejudice, and racism, while learning to appreciate differences within their school community. The Principal, Assistant Principals, Counselors, Media & Technology Specialists, and other professionals will meet with ninth graders during this class when appropriate.


The Child Development Course introduces students to gaining an understanding in how young children grow, develop and learn. They develop Career Readiness Skills by working collaboratively in groups to complete projects, write and teach hands-on lessons, interpret educational theories into real life experiences.  Students will become familiar with the ages and stages of development as they gain an understanding of children and the roles of the teacher, parent, and caregiver. They will understand the importance of developing a home-school connection with families to foster the learning and development in a school setting. Students will gain knowledge in creating a positive learning environment. Through this course students will have first hand experiences with children that will provide a foundation for careers in working with children.

Interior Design (Semester, Grades 9-12)

The Interior Design course offers high school students an opportunity to explore the exciting world of interior design. Through a combination of theory and hands-on projects, students will engage in various activities and assignments that will enhance their understanding of interior design industry concepts.  Students will learn the fundamental principles and elements of interior design, as well as gain practical skills in space planning, color theory, furniture selection, learn how to create mood boards, develop floor plans, and select appropriate materials and finishes for different spaces. Students will also have the opportunity to explore different design styles and trends, and apply them to their own design projects.

Fashion Design 1 (Semester, Grades 9-12)

Fashion Design I will incorporate beginner to intermediate level sewing techniques through the product design and development of processes that lies behind the clothing and accessories that we wear each and every day. Based on individual interests, students are assigned construction projects which may include embroidery, home decor items, clothing, and fashion accessories reflecting fashion and interior design industry practices.  Throughout completion of this course students will have established the foundation for creating successful career opportunities available within the fashion industry.

Fashion Design 2 (Full Year, Grades 10-12)

Popular fashion and accessory designers like Coco Chanel, Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein did not wait for an opportunity to come to them; they created it. In this class, students will do just that. Clothing Construction can only be taken if the prerequisite course requirements of Fashion Design I have been met.  Students will continue to build upon their apparel construction and design skills to develop their very own clothing and accessory designs.  Throughout this process students will understand the characteristics of textiles, develop mastery of sewing tools and equipment, apply the principles of pattern making, and clothing construction reflected upon in the fashion and accessory industry.

Prerequisites:  Fashion Design I

Culinary Arts is an essential course in understanding the nutritional needs and food choices for optimal health and well-being of teenagers. Our goal is to foster the development of culinary knowledge and practical skills required to be self-sufficient in areas including: sanitation and safety, knife skills, use of large and small equipment and varied food preparation. Upon successful completion of this course students will have mastered basic cooking skills, awareness of career opportunities in the foods industry and consumer knowledge necessary for survival in today’s society.

The goal of Tomorrow’s Teachers is to assist academically talented students interested in teaching to develop the interpersonal and leadership skills necessary for a career in education. In addition, the program provides students with the skills needed to become community leaders who are knowledgeable in the field of teaching so that they may become civic advocates for education. Students learn the fundamentals of education by participating in a district-level field experience at the elementary, middle, or high school level.  All students are required to attend at least one teaching conference sponsored by FEA and are welcome to apply for a state officers position in FEA. This course enables students to:

College Credit may be earned from Rider University.
