All families are required to electronically review and sign the following forms in the Genesis Parent Portal every year, prior using a school device:
Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)
Acknowledgement of the Protection Plan offer
Acknowledgement of our use of LightSpeed Classroom
Before a device can be issued to a student, the parent/guardian AND student must verify that you have read, understand and accept the Acceptable Use of Networks/Computers Policy (AUP).
Before a device can be issued to a student, the parent/guardian AND student must verify that you have read, understand and accept the Device Agreement and the District Policy 7520 Loan of School Equipment.
As per the Anti-Big Brother Act (N.J.S.A. 18A:36-39 (P.L. 2013, c. 44)), school-issued electronic devices have the ability to record or collect information on user’s activity, both online and offline. The Middlesex Borough Public Schools will not use any of these capabilities in a manner that would violate the privacy rights of a student or individual residing with the student. The website for the Anti-Big Brother Act can be found at: https://www.njleg.state.nj.us/2012/Bills/PL13/44_.HTM
Students and parents will be responsible for district-owned technology property that is issued to them, just as they are for other district-owned items such as textbooks, calculators, athletic equipment, etc.
The Middlesex Public School District recognizes that there is a need to protect the investment by both the district and the student/parent. To help reduce this cost, all students have the opportunity to purchase the Protection Plan for their Chromebook to help cover costs if the device is accidentally broken or damaged. The cost of the Protection Plan is $20 annually per device and is nonrefundable. While there is no cost for the use of the Chromebook, it is imperative that the Chromebook the student is issued be maintained and handled in a responsible way.
The Protection Plan safeguards you against accidental damage. It does NOT cover loss, damage by flood/fire/intentional destruction. The protection program does not cover misuse, neglect, or intentional damage. Students will be responsible for the entire cost of repairs or replacement to the computing device damaged through student misuse, neglect, intentional damage, or loss and theft. In case of theft, an official police report will be required. More than two (2) damage events per year will be deemed negligence and not covered by this policy.
Parents can pay online via MySchoolBucks or submit a $20 check (payable to Middlesex Board of Education). If submitting a check, please include your child’s name in the memo field. If your student receives a reduced or free lunch, the protection plan cost is $10 per year. Applications for free or reduced lunch are to be submitted to the Business Office at the beginning of each year. Please visit the District Website for further information on applying for Free or Reduced Lunch.
We understand that there may be circumstances where leaving the student’s district assigned Chromebook at school is the best option for the family. Therefore, we do allow for this choice. While we encourage our students to take advantage of the 24/7 access to technology, we have made the take-home model option available to all families with students in grades 6-12. Your child's teachers have planned homework and lessons around the expectation that students have uncontested access to a device during the school day as well as on weekends and over vacations. If a family opts to have their child leave the Chromebook at school we hope a home device will be made available so that students will not be hindered from completing their school work.
The Request to Leave Chromebook at School Form must be filled out and submitted to personnel at the Chromebook distribution session (at the beginning of the school year) or to the main office (during the school year).
