In recent times we as a society have seen the development of depression rise, especially in adolescents, and have seen the vast array of problems it can result in. Depression is one of the most dangerous mental health concerns, and should be taken very seriously to try to find ways to treat it. There are so many different reasons and potential causes for depression in adolescents, but one of particular significance is emotional abuse. Emotional abuse is such a danger to us as a society, because very few people know just how much of an impact it had on us mentally. Many studies have compared various types of abuse, and emotional abuse has the strongest relation to the development of depression. it was also found that 363 per 1,000 children are affected worldwide, which is much higher than physical or sexual abuse. Emotional abuse is one of the most overlooked causes of depression, and the goal for this project is to not only shed light onto the relationship of emotional abuse and depression, but to also discuss the different mediators of said relationship. Each mediator has its own way of effecting depression, and how emotional abuse results in depression. This literature review will focus on how emotional abuse in childhood can be linked to the development of depression and depressive symptoms. We will also be focusing on what mediators are involved in emotional abuse and depression and depressive symptoms, and how they correlate to each other as well.
