Emotional abuse is such an important cause of depression to pay attention to, and it should be a bigger focus to find ways to treat depression stemming from emotional abuse. Emotional abuse has been discussed across this literature review, noting how it can not only directly affect depression in adolescents, but it can also indirectly affect depression through many different mediators. It was previously stated how emotional abuse can be used as a predictor for depression and depressive symptoms, and how there are also many different mediators in the relationship between emotional abuse and depression. One of the most important mediators being emotional dysregulation, as it was consistently related to emotional abuse and depression. However there were many other mediators discussed as well, because if what is causing the depression is understood, it will be much easier to go about treating it. By recognizing the profound impact of emotional abuse and the pathways through which it manifests as depression, Mental Health Care Professionals can work toward more targeted prevention and mental health support for young people.
