As a part of my university and departmental honors thesis, I worked closely with my faculty mentor, Dr. Anna Radke, to implement the ABA paradigm, which had not been previously used in the RAD Lab. Building on an extensive literature review I completed with Dr. Ryan Rakoczy, I proposed using the ABA paradigm to investigate the role of the opioid system in the compulsive behaviors of AN. With Dr. Radke's guidance and input from my fellow lab members, I took the lead in evaluating the current literature to determine how to best implement the ABA paradigm for my specific research goals. This project ultimately gave me the opportunity to take initiative in all aspects of the project, strengthening my leadership skills.
Completing this research project gave me invaluable opportunities to further develop my critical thinking skills. In designing and executing the ABA protocol, I had to critically evaluate the existing literature to make informed decisions about how to best implement and replicate the existing paradigm. I also had to anticipate potential challenges, plan ahead for logistical needs, and troubleshoot issues and unexpected outcomes that arose during experimentation. These experiences not only strengthened my ability to critically evaluate field- relevant information, but it also strengthened my confidence and adaptability when navigating complex tasks. These skills will be invaluable for any future research I complete.
This project allowed me to engage in every stage of the research process, including conducting a broad literature review, proposing a new area of research to my PI, receiving feedback from my fellow lab members, applying for university grants, obtaining ethical approval, collecting and analyzing data, and presenting my findings. Having a central role throughout the entire research process not only enhanced my learning experience as an undergraduate and confirmed my passion for research, but it also provide me with foundational skills necessary to succeed in a graduate level behavioral neuroscience program.
