Current Students

Undergrad Research Forum-Rene Halcom

Halcom presented her research at the URF on April 20,2022. Halcom will receive her BS Biochemistry in May 2022 and return to Alaska where she collected the plants she has worked on all year.

Congratulations Meiling!


Meiling successfully defended her MS Thesis on April 14 2022. She starts her new job in the pharmaceutical industry with Frontage in May. Great work Meiling!

Undergrad Research Forum-Ellie Knutson

Ellie Knutson presented her research at the URF on April 20, 2022. Ellie will receive her BS Biochemistry in May 2022 and has a job with DOE.

Dean's Scholar--Jenna McClain

Jenna was awarded a Dean's scholar award for the 2022-23 academic year. She will be able to present her research at a national meeting using the funding from this award. Congratulations Jenna!

University of California Irvine-Quynh

Quynh Nguyen (BS 2021) starts her graduate program at UC Irvine in August 2022. Congratulations Quyhn!

Just accepted publication

Abby Brandt (BS 2019) is a co-author on a paper that was accepted by Journal of Mammology in September 2021. The paper describes deer feeding habits. Abby did the analyses of the feed for the trials. Nice work Abby!

Summer Internship!

Ifey Okafor (BS Biochem 2021) is in her first year of law school at University of Akron. She has an internship for summer 2022 at AbbVie in Chicago. She will be part of their Patent Legal Academy Program. Great job Ifey!

Ellie Summer Internship 2021

Ellie has obtained a summer internship with the U.S. Department of Energy Summer Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI). She will be working with Dr. John Cort. His lab has expertise in NMR, and she will be working on a Natural Products Magnetic Resonance Database. Congratulations Ellie!


Summer Fellowship for Quynh!

Quynh has a Hughes Fellowship for summer 2021. She will work on a collaborative project with Dr. Kravats' lab, trying to apply computational methods to some of our tannin-protein complexes.

Ifey goes to Law School!

Ifey will attend University of Akron Law School after she graduates in May 2021. She hopes to specialize in intellectual property and patent law--put that biochemistry degree to work!! Congratulations Ifey.

Three Minute Thesis

Sadeepa was a finalist for the Miami "Three Minute Thesis" presentation in February 2021. She did a great job enthusiastically presenting her work for a general audience. Congratulations Sadeepa!


More Summer Internships for 2021!

Halcom will do a summer internship in Fairbanks, Alaska working on a project related to the diets of Southwestern Alaskans. This is a great complement to Halcom's Global Health co-major.

Jules will do an internship with Dr. Ware researching and analyzing sickle cell data at Cincinnati Children's Hospital through the Biomedical Research Internship for Minority Students.

Congratulations to all our students for finding great positions to continue their education or employment over the summer.

Groupe Polyphenols Board

At the International Conference on Polyphenols (virtual in Turku) meeting, I was elected as the new Vice President of the Board. I am looking forward to working with the Board to continue to build our Society as the premier group with special interest and expertise in polyphenols.


Bridget McGivern wins the Ragai Ibrahim Prize!

At the International Conference on Polyphenols (virtual in Turku) meeting, Bridge received the Ragai Ibrahim Prize. this award recognizes a doctoral student for being first author of a highly influential and innovative paper. Bridget's paper on decomposition in anoxic soils is an outstanding contribution (Nature Communications 2021) In addition to the award, she presented the paper at an oral session.

Recent Graduates

2020 graduate Rosie Magro is just completing her first year of medical school at Ohio University. She spent a productive gap year working as a state tested nursing assistant, a job that gave her a lot of patient experience and really enhanced her med school applications.

2020 graduate Ellen Tieke is a graduate student at Miami, working towards her MS degree in the Cellular, Structural and Molecular Biology program. In Fall 2021 she received an award for "Top Poster" for her presentation of "Can a computer program really predict gene regulatory regions?" at the Graduate Research Forum. Great job Ellen!

2018 graduate Elizabeth Belling has just been accepted to a Genetics Counseling MS program at Long Island University (Post). She took advantage of her work experience and networking opportunities at Cincinnati Childrens' to prepare for graduate work. Great choice Elizabeth!


Rachel Polak (BS May 2017) is joining a new interdisciplinary graduate program at North Carolina State University in August 2021. Congratulations Rachel!!

Anne Cunagin

Anne passed the ASBMB proficiency exam in Biochemistry to obtain "Certification with Distinction" by this professional organization. Great job Anne!

Congratulations on MS degree

Ryan Lubleski recently defended his MS Thesis and received his degree in December 2019. Since leaving Miami, Ryan has been working as a protein chemist at Covance Labs. He works with Kim Cosky who recieved her MS degree in our lab in 2008. Congratulations Ryan!

Min Li (PhD 2014)

Min completed his postdoctoral work with Mario Ferruzi at North Carolina State University and has started a position as a research chemist at ADM Foods in Champaign IL. Congratulations Min!


Shanen Sherrer BS 2005

Shanen is an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at St. Mary's College of Maryland. She has an active research program and is developing excellence in teaching biochemistry lecture and lab. Congratulations to Shanen for her sucesses and we hope to hear more about her accomplishments!
