The Beginning of My Journey
Every journey usually begins with a simple step. For me, my SEA Teacher journey started with a dream to experience education beyond my own country. As an English Education student, I have always been curious about how students from different cultures learn, communicate, and interact in the classroom.
My interest in joining an international program actually started long before I discovered the SEA Teacher Program. One of the reasons I chose to study English Education was because I believed it could open doors for me to connect with the wider world. I once applied for another international program, hoping to experience studying in a different academic environment. Unfortunately, I did not pass the selection stage.
At that time, I felt disappointed. However, the experience also taught me something important: sometimes opportunities come at the right time, not always at the time we expect them. I believe that when we lose one opportunity, another one may be waiting for us somewhere ahead.
Some time later, I came across information about the SEA Teacher Program organized by SEAMEO. When I first learned about the program, I immediately felt interested. The idea of experiencing teaching practice in another country sounded both exciting and challenging. It felt like an opportunity that could help me grow, both personally and professionally.
At first, I hesitated to apply. There were several things that made me unsure. I was already in my final year at university and busy working on my academic responsibilities. The program was also self-funded, which meant I had to think carefully about the financial aspect. In addition, I did not even have a passport at that time.
However, the more I thought about it, the more it stayed in my mind. It felt like something I should at least try. After discussing it with my family and receiving their support, I finally decided to apply, even though the registration period was almost over. I kept reminding myself of a simple idea: sometimes we just have to be brave enough to try.
The application process required preparation and commitment. I had to prepare several documents, complete the requirements, and go through different stages of the selection process. There were moments when I felt nervous while waiting for the results, but I kept reminding myself why I wanted to join the program in the first place.
Finally, after going through the entire process, I received the news from my email that I had been selected as one of the SEA Teacher participants for the 11th batch at the University of Northern Philippines. That moment felt incredibly rewarding. All the preparation and effort suddenly made sense, because it meant I was about to begin a new chapter as a pre-service teacher who would experience teaching in another country.
That journey eventually brought me to the Philippines, specifically to Vigan City, where I spent several weeks learning, teaching, and experiencing a new culture.
Alhamdulillah.
