About Me:
I am a 6th-grade special education teacher at Murphysboro Middle School, where I teach all math and science; this is my 16th year of teaching. I am passionate about butterflies, science, art, and environmental sustainability. In addition to being an educator, I am a part of the Noyce River Region Master Teaching Fellows Program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. With this program, I'm learning about environmental sustainability and how to incorporate innovative hands-on science into my classroom. I hope to empower students with knowledge and inspiration to make positive changes in their school and community. When I'm not busy teaching, I'm at home with my little dog brainstorming ways to save the world.
Teaching Philosophy:
I strongly believe in directing students toward self-determination; teaching problem-solving strategies is essential in driving students toward independence. Helping students become aware of their unique strengths increases self-confidence and productivity. In my classroom, I offer a safe place where educational activities are fun and engaging. I work hard to create an atmosphere where students can thrive and are comfortable and confident in their learning environment.
Educational Background:
I received my Bachelor's degree in Sociology/Anthropology from the University of Illinois-Springfield in 1993. In 2002, I received my Master's degree in Sociology from SIUC. Last but not least, I received my Special Education certificate from SIUC in 2006. I am currently a fellow at SIUC pursuing my Master Teacher of Environmental Sustainability certification.
