October Math News – Grade 6

The sixth graders have been doing a really great job so far in Chapter 1! I feel like they are beginning to understand how our math classroom works and what is expected of them.

We are learning to build on one another’s ideas, work together, problem-solve, and explain our thinking. The students are also working on i-Ready to help strengthen their individual math skills.

📅 Important Date:
Our first math test will be on Wednesday, October 14th. We will begin test preparation on Wednesday, October 7th so students have plenty of time to review the skills and concepts we have learned in Chapter 1.

Chapter 2

In October, our sixth graders will begin Chapter 2, where we will focus on fractions, decimals, and percents. Students will learn how these three forms of numbers are connected and how to convert from one form to another.

Throughout the chapter, students will practice converting fractions and mixed numbers to decimals, decimals to fractions and percents, comparing and ordering fractions, and representing percents on a graph. We will continue to focus on problem-solving, explaining our mathematical thinking, and working together to find solutions.

I’m excited to see the students continue to build their confidence and understanding as we move into our next chapter!

October 7th Grade Math Update:   

Dear 7th Grade Families,

We are wrapping up Chapter 1 this week, and the students have been working hard! Throughout the chapter, they have completed projects, participated in partner quizzes, and taken individual quizzes to demonstrate their understanding. Our Chapter 1 test will be on Wednesday, October 14th.

We will conclude Chapter 1 with Lesson 3: Dimensional Analysis, where students will learn how to convert measurements accurately by using unit ratios.

Looking ahead, we will begin Chapter 3: Integers this month. Students will build their understanding of integers and apply their skills to a variety of mathematical situations and problem-solving activities.

October Math News – 8th Grade

Dear 8th Grade Families,

The students have been working hard in math, and I am excited about the progress they are making! We are continuing to build our problem-solving skills, explain our mathematical thinking, and work together to tackle challenging problems.

This month, we will be focusing on Chapter 2: Equations and Expressions. Students will work with rational coefficients, two-step equations, writing two-step equations from word problems, multi-step equations, and equations with variables on both sides.

As we move through the chapter, students will continue to practice showing their work, checking their solutions, and explaining how they arrived at their answers.
