As we prepare for the 2026–2027 school year, we want to remind families about an important change to our student cell phone and electronic device expectations.
Beginning on the first day of school, Morris Hills Regional District will implement a bell-to-bell cell phone/electronic device policy in accordance with new New Jersey legislation. This updated requirement is designed to create a more focused learning environment where students can be fully present, engaged in instruction, and connected with one another throughout the school day.
Students must turn off, password protect, and secure all personal electronic communication devices in their assigned lockers before the start of the school day. Devices must remain secured in lockers from the beginning of the instructional day until dismissal.
This expectation applies to cell phones and other personal electronic devices, including smart watches, AirPods/earbuds, smart glasses, smart rings, tablets, personal gaming devices, and other internet-enabled communication devices.
Students may access their devices before the start of the school day and after dismissal. During the school day, students who need to contact a parent/guardian should report to the General Office for assistance. Families who need to reach a student during the school day should contact the General Office.
We understand that changes like this may lead to questions. To help families prepare for the transition, we have included this link to our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document with additional details regarding expectations, exceptions, and consequences. This document will continue to be updated as needed throughout the school year.
We appreciate your support and partnership as we work together to provide the best possible learning environment for all students. By minimizing distractions and encouraging meaningful face-to-face connections, we can help students stay focused, engaged, and prepared for success.
Violations of this policy will result in the following disciplinary actions, as outlined in the Student Handbook:
1st Offense – Central Detention; device must be picked up by a parent/guardian
2nd Offense – Saturday Detention; device must be picked up by a parent/guardian
3rd Offense – In-School Suspension; device must be picked up by a parent/guardian
Devices will not be returned directly to students. If a student violates this policy more than three times, they must turn in their device to the Principal or designee each morning and retrieve it only after the school day ends for the remainder of the school year.
These guidelines are in place to support student focus, minimize distractions, and ensure a learning environment where everyone can succeed.
