The String Ensemble is our curricular course offering at both Morris Hills, and Morris Knolls. Students enrolled in any section of String Ensemble perform as part of the district string orchestra. This course is available to all students grades 9-12 who play, or are interested in playing, violin, viola, cello, bass, piano, or harp.

String Ensemble has no pre-requisite, and can be repeated for credit. Throughout the year, students will study a variety of repertoire comprising all of the musical style periods, as well as scores from films, and popular arrangements. By way of performance study, students will refine their understanding of music notation, orchestral playing techniques, musical analysis, and critical listening.

Students in grades 10-12 have the option of taking "String Ensemble Honors" earning them an additional 5 points in their final GPA for the honors level. Students who are enrolled in the Honors section will meet concurrently with the regular level, but will complete additional requirements to earn their honors credits. Honors music students will complete monthly listening journals, one reading response per marking period, and one concert review per semester. Additionally, honors students will complete a mid-year jury, and play in a spring recital.

A Lunch Strings option is available to students who cannot schedule the regular course block. This option is only scheduled with prior permission from the instructor, and only when the student's schedule absolutely prohibits the normal course block. Students may not enroll in lunch strings simply to schedule additional electives.
