Independent Reading
Raz Kids
5th graders are required to read informational texts at least once a week. They maintain a log and reflect on their quiz scores with Miss Oles and make an action plan for future reading.
Self-Selected Novels
Students maintain a fiction reading log and meet with Miss Oles to discuss their reading each week.
Genre Study
Adventure
Adventure stories are stories of survival or life in the great outdoors.
Fantasy
Fantasy is a type of fiction with strange or otherworldly settings or characters. In these stories there are often events or objects that can't happen or exist in real life.
Realistic Fiction
Realistic fiction are stories that accurately depict life as it could be lived today.
Historical Fiction
Historical Fiction contains an imaginative story set within an event or time period that actually occurred in history. The characters may be fictional and/or real characters.
Mystery
Mysteries are imaginative stories dealing with the solution of a secret, problem, or crime, and involving suspense or intrigue.
Science Fiction
Science Fiction stories are set in a future that scientific or technological advance could or might make possible.
Memoir
A memoir is a written account of a person's memory of certain events or people.
