The Metuchen Public School District is committed to “provide all students with a safe and nurturing environment in which to foster academic, social and emotional growth.” The district's Social Emotional Character Development (SECD) Committee was established to support staff and parents by providing resources to help students understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, make responsible decisions, and demonstrate good character. With the COVID-19 pandemic upon us, we recognize the importance of our role in the community and are further committed to expanding our focus by providing resources for student development and success.

Overview of SEL Family Night

SEL Family Night 2020

The SECD committee was fortunate to hold its first community involvement event one week before schools closed for the COVID-19 pandemic. With over 160 people in attendance, students and committee members explained what SEL is, how SEL is implemented and what it looks like in our schools & classrooms, and how to support children in developing & practicing SEL skills at home. Click on the video on the left for a brief overview of the event. If you were unable to attend the March 5, 2020 event, or would like a reinforcement of the event, click on the photo to the left for a virtual recreation of the SEL Family Night.
