Habitat (Community): Upland woods, open wooded bluffs and slopes, clearings in woods, pine barrens, oak savannas, and upland prairies.

Wildlife Benefits: The seeds are a source of food for birds and small mammals, and the leaves provide cover for wildlife.

Distribution: In the United States plants occur from Maine to North Carolina and west from North Dakota to Arkansas
