Finding your Metsamdti is more than finding someone you love. It is finding someone whose core needs you understand and who understands yours.
Many relationships struggle, not because there is no love, but because each person gives love in the way they prefer to receive it instead of the way their partner actually needs it.
This article is inspired by the Tigrinya book "ምስጢር ሕጉሳት መጻምድቲ (Mstir Hugusat Metsamdti, The Secret of Happy Couples)", written by the renowned Eritrean author Mesfin Gebrehiwot (መስፍን ገብረሂወት). The book presents a thoughtful framework for understanding the fundamental needs of husbands and wives. Whether you agree with every point or not, it offers valuable insights that encourage meaningful conversations before marriage and intentional commitment throughout married life.
One of the key messages from the book is that every husband and wife has fundamental needs that should never be ignored. Before marriage, these needs should be discussed openly. After marriage, they should be protected intentionally. Love alone is not enough. Understanding, communication, and the willingness to meet each other's needs are what help a marriage thrive.
According to ምስጢር ሕጉሳት መጻምድቲ (Mstir Hugusat Metsamdti, The Secret of Happy Couples), many men deeply value the following needs.
A healthy marriage includes mutual intimacy, where both husband and wife care about each other's emotional and physical satisfaction. Intimacy should never become one person's responsibility, but a shared expression of love, trust, and commitment.
Attraction should continue after marriage. Caring for yourself is not only about appearance, it is also about showing that your relationship remains important. Continuing to invest in yourself communicates care, confidence, and appreciation for your spouse.
A peaceful home becomes a place of rest from the pressures of life. Creating a calm, welcoming, and organized environment strengthens the relationship and gives both partners a place where they can find peace together.
Many men need to feel respected, appreciated, and recognized for their efforts, sacrifices, leadership, and commitment to the family. Genuine words of appreciation can strengthen confidence and deepen emotional connection.
Friendship is an essential part of marriage. Spending enjoyable time together and participating in activities your partner enjoys creates emotional closeness. Sometimes love looks like watching a football match together, preparing snacks, going for a walk, cooking together, travelling, or simply laughing and enjoying each other's company.
According to ምስጢር ሕጉሳት መጻምድቲ (Mstir Hugusat Metsamdti, The Secret of Happy Couples), many women deeply value the following needs.
Small expressions of love, hugs, kisses, holding hands, kind words, and gentle physical affection create emotional security and strengthen the bond between husband and wife.
Regular conversations about daily life, feelings, dreams, challenges, and experiences help build trust, understanding, and emotional connection. Communication prevents unnecessary assumptions and helps couples stay emotionally connected.
Transparency creates safety. When there is honesty, there is less room for fear, assumptions, and misunderstanding. Openness allows both partners to feel secure in the relationship and confident in one another.
A woman wants to know that her family's essential needs will be cared for and that her husband is committed to providing stability, responsibility, and security. Financial support is not simply about money, it is about creating an environment where the family feels protected and cared for.
No matter how busy life becomes, making time for your spouse and children communicates love more powerfully than words alone. Presence is one of the greatest gifts a husband can give his family.
Before asking someone else to understand your needs, take time to understand your own.
Can you clearly explain what makes you feel loved?
Can you describe what makes you feel emotionally safe?
Can you communicate those needs with honesty and kindness?
If your needs are unclear to you, they will likely be unclear to your future spouse as well. Healthy relationships begin with self-awareness.
One of the biggest mistakes in relationships is making assumptions.
Don't assume your partner thinks like you.
Don't assume they value what you value.
Don't assume they naturally know what you need.
Instead, ask.
Listen.
Be curious.
Pay attention to how they communicate, what brings them joy, what hurts them, and how they express love.
If something is unclear, ask with genuine interest instead of making conclusions.
Love is Learning Another Person
Your needs are not automatically your partner's needs.
Just because you give what you would appreciate does not necessarily mean you are giving what they need.
One of the greatest acts of love is learning to see life through your partner's perspective instead of only through your own.
Sometimes this simply means asking yourself,
"If I were in my partner's position, how would I feel?"
Empathy allows us to understand before we expect to be understood.
Take a quiet moment before answering these questions. There are no right or wrong answers. The goal is not to judge yourself, but to better understand your emotional needs so you can communicate them clearly with your future spouse.
Take your time. Write your answers honestly.
Think about moments when you have genuinely felt emotionally full and deeply cared for.
Do you feel most loved when someone:
Shows physical affection?
Spends quality time with you?
Appreciates your efforts?
Is honest and transparent?
Supports you financially or practically?
Creates a peaceful home?
Joins you in activities you enjoy?
Reflection:
Which of these makes you feel the safest and most loved?
Why?
Think honestly.
Which situation affects you the deepest?
Feeling ignored.
Feeling disrespected.
Lack of affection.
Poor communication.
Dishonesty.
Financial irresponsibility.
Feeling physically unwanted.
Feeling lonely even when you're together.
Feeling that your partner has no interest in spending time with you.
Reflection:
Our deepest emotional wounds often reveal our deepest emotional needs.
Would you rather they:
Show more affection?
Communicate more openly?
Appreciate you more?
Spend more quality time with you?
Become more financially responsible?
Create a peaceful home?
Enjoy more hobbies and activities with you?
Improve physical intimacy?
Reflection:
Why is that need so important to you?
Think about how you normally show love to people.
Do you naturally:
Hug and kiss them?
Compliment them?
Help with responsibilities?
Spend time together?
Cook for them?
Buy thoughtful gifts?
Have long conversations?
Plan fun activities together?
Now ask yourself:
Is this also how my future spouse naturally feels loved?
Sometimes we love people the way we want to be loved, instead of the way they need to be loved.
"I feel emotionally safest in a relationship when my partner..."
Don't overthink it.
Write everything that comes naturally.
Your answer may reveal what your heart values most.
After completing these questions, look back at your answers.
Ask yourself:
What are my three most important relationship needs?
Can I clearly explain them to someone else?
Am I looking for a partner who naturally values these needs?
Am I equally willing to understand and meet my future spouse's needs?
Have I ever expected someone to understand my needs without communicating them?
Remember,
No one can read your mind.
Healthy relationships are built through honest conversations, curiosity, empathy, patience, and intentional love.
If you are getting to know someone for marriage, ask each other the following questions.
1. What are the three things that make you feel most loved?
2. What are the three things that make you feel most neglected or emotionally distant?
3. When you imagine a happy marriage, what does an ordinary day look like?
4. How did your family express love while you were growing up, and how has that shaped your expectations today?
5. What is one need that you hope your future spouse will never ignore, and why is it so important to you?
Take turns answering each question.
Don't interrupt.
Don't defend yourself.
Don't try to fix anything.
Simply listen to understand.
Sometimes one honest conversation reveals more about long-term compatibility than months of casual dating.
At Metsamdti, we believe finding your soulmate is not simply about finding the right person. It is also about becoming the right partner for one another.
Compatibility is not built on attraction alone. It grows through understanding, honest communication, empathy, shared values, mutual respect, and the daily choice to love one another intentionally.
Because lasting marriages are not built by chance.
They are built by two people who choose, every day, to understand each other's hearts.
