What is Expedition Class?
Expedition Class is an opportunity for all sophomores to have a common learning experience across the grade, whether you are learning in-person or remotely this semester. During Expedition Class, we will explore the big ideas of our fall expedition to help support the learning you are doing in your content classes. With more time dedicated to the expedition, you will have opportunities to engage in deeper learning and discussion about our society and your role in it.
Additionally, we are all living through an intense, unprecedented, and challenging time, where community is more important than ever. Expedition class will also be a place to build community and support one another after we’ve been apart for so long!
What is our Fall Expedition?
Our fall expedition is called Counter Narrative! In Expedition Class, we will be developing a foundational understanding of what dominant narratives are, and how they function to support people in power by silencing other narratives. We'll be looking at examples of dominant narratives with a lens toward how they silence and deny the lived experiences of marginalized groups, and we'll also explore the power of counter narratives in affirming individuals' identities and disrupting harmful worldviews.
Guiding Questions:
Who owns the narrative?
How does the narrative impact our understanding of the world?
What if we want to rewrite the narrative?
How will I be graded?
You will receive a grade for your work in class each day, along with a more heavily weighted grade for our final expedition product. All grades for Expedition Class will appear in JumpRope along with grades for your content classes. Additionally, Expedition Class teachers will be leaving JumpRope comments to help you and your Crew teacher reflect on your mastery of the HOWLs in this class.
