All lessons and rehearsals are scheduled during the school day as part of the specialist classes.
Students have band during their specialist period three times each six day cycle. Two of these lessons are in in smaller groups, separated by instrument. This allows us to focus on reading music and instrument playing technique. The third is a full band rehearsal to focus on playing together as a band and preparing for concerts.
Band students also take P.E., Health, and Spanish classes once per six day cycle.
In order to make consistent progress, Band students need to practice their instrument 3 times per week. This is necessary for mastering playing techniques, improving music reading skills, and being prepared to learn new things in the following lessons and rehearsals. Students will sometimes be asked to submit practice logs reporting on when, how long, and what they are practicing at home.
Students will have recording assignments to record and submit at home roughly once per month. The Band Director listens to each recording to monitor progress and provides individual feedback to help students improve their playing.
5th & 6th Grade students have 3 after school performances each year. These are required for all Band students, and dates are provided well in advance of the concert to avoid conflicts. These include:
Marsh Band Winter Concert in December
Methuen Band Jamboree in March (This is district wide, and takes place at Methuen High School.)
Marsh Band Spring Concert in May or June
5th graders can choose from Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, and Percussion. You may choose to Rent or Purchase an instrument.
David French Music Company's Rent-to-Own program offers the most security and convenience, and ensures a high quality instrument and necessary maintenance supplies.
Purchasing an instrument may be more expensive up front, and is more complex, but I am happy to assist those who are interested in purchasing.
The Methuen Public Schools uses the Essential Elements for Band Method Books as well as the included online program, Essential Elements Interactive, for practice recording assignments. To use the program, you will need a device with a working microphone and internet access.
Students will need a collapsible music stand to practice at home and for the yearly Methuen Band Jamboree performance. These are inexpensive and easy to find online or in local music stores, and are included in instrument rentals.
Yes. 6th Grade is the last year that you will be allowed to switch into Band class.Â
Band is a lot of work, so consider it carefully. You will have Band on your schedule 3 times every cycle. You will have to practice at home 3 time every week, and submit recording assignments done at home.
If you love music and are willing to consistently work hard, then Band may be the perfect place for you. Just sign up above and speak to Mr. Delabruere in person or through email.
If you're currently in Chorus, you must speak with your Chorus teacher first.
