Our Project

We are working with the Philadelphia Zoo to help the Rodrigues Fruit Bats. We have been working on this project for most of the 2021-2022 school year. We are trying to raise awareness for climate change, energy waste, and the problems that Rodrigues Fruit Bats face. Here is a link for a presentation we created:

Rodrigues Warriors Fruit Bat Slideshow Presentation.

We would be very glad for you to help. Please take the pledge and share this website with your friends and family. If you have any comments, there is a space where you can type them in our pledge.

WE ARE... THE RODRIGUES WARRIORS and in this project, we are working to save and help a critically endangered animal, the Rodrigues Fruit Bat. It was a hard choice, but eventually our team came to the conclusion that we had to help these bats. We did some research and figured out that the best way to help these animals was to educate as many people as possible about the bats and encourage them to make changes to save energy and reduce climate change. We are doing this in our schools, our district, and trying to reach people in the public too. With our website and awareness projects, our goal is to reach as many people as possible to spread the word on how humans can change the behaviors that harm these animals.

Our team also made a video to show the challenges the Rodrigues Fruit Bats face and to educate people about what they can do to help. There are now only about 20,000 of these bats left and while that does not seem like a small number, because they only live on one tiny island, they are in danger! Check out this page of our website to see more about our project, the steps we took to accomplish our goals and how we are working to help these amazing animals!!

OUR PROCESS:

(See our📸photo and 🎥video gallery at the bottom of this page to see us in action!)

1. Video conference with our Zoo expert, Meghan, to learn about the UNLESS Contest

2. Research and selection of animal and team name (the Rodrigues Fruit Bat won by a small margin!)

3. Research and selection of project focus (saving energy and reducing climate change) and plan

4. Virtual Field trip with the Philadelphia Zoo to learn more about our focus animal and discuss our project with our Zoo expert, Meghan

5. Working together to research and create our website, the pledge to help, our long and short videos to spread the word, and completing our additional conservation projects: recycling computer game, plastic bottle collection project, and deforestation skit.

6. Presenting our information to our schools and asking families to join us in spreading the word and take our pledge to change behaviors and promoting our website on social media such as Twitter and Facebook

7. Requesting and having our school principals share our website and project information to our broader school communities via the weekly informational e-newsletters

8. Contacting our school administration (we met with our Superintendent, Dr. Zerbe!) and other district principals to ask them to help us share our research and website on our District website and in their school announcements to educate and encourage older students to share our message and pledge

9. Ongoing: Tracking our progress using Google Analytics and continuing to spread the word, and encouraging our friends, family and beyond to learn about these animals and change behaviors to help!

We are proud that our project will continue to reach more people to teach them about the Rodrigues Fruit Bats, animal conservation, and how people can help reduce both energy waste and climate change! We have been excited to see the continued growth in the number of people who have visited our website and taken our pledge!

OUR SCHOOL PROJECTS:

All 4 Schools - Our Rodrigues Warriors Team of 29 students: GOAL: To educate as many people as possible about the Rodrigues Fruit Bats and how small changes in our behavior can help these animals and the environment overall.

Main Team Project:
