Independent reading Requirements
"Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic."
- J.K. Rowling Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Because reading practice is an essential component for reading growth, independent reading (both in and outside of class) is a required part of this course. To facilitate this growth, each student will receive an individualized reading goal each marking. Below are the general guidelines for how the independent reading program will be structured, along with the first marking period due dates.
During the school year, the students will be encouraged to read three books per marking period and meet their individualized Accelerated Reader point goal to receive a 100% for independent reading. The books will be self-selected by the students, as is assessment for each book. Students will have a choice of three assessments: Accelerated Reader (AR) book quizzes, a three paragraph essay, or a video book talk.
Independent Reading will account for 10% of the student’s reading grade each marking period.

Shoot for a minimum of 3 books per marking period
Complete the reading and take an AR quiz, or complete an alternative assessment, by the dates posted in class and on your book log. The dates for the first marking period are as follows:
1/3 Goal by September 22nd (end of day)
2/3 Goal by October 13th (end of day)
Complete Goal by November 3rd (end of day)
If you have taken an AR quiz and earned a grade lower than a 60%, you have several options:
You may ask your teacher to retake the test, but you MUST show evidence of a different strategy used the second time to support your understanding of the text.
