A Metcalf Tradition 

for Over 40 Years

Outdoor Education is an important part of the Metcalf experience. Beginning in kindergarten and continuing through 8th grade, students participate in hands-on learning experiences that extend learning beyond the four walls of a classroom.  Through these experiences, they build confidence, teamwork, leadership, and a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors. 

Outdoor Education supports students' academic, social, emotional, and physical growth through meaningful experiences in nature.

5th & 6th Grade Outdoor Education 

Location: East Bay Camp in Hudson, IL
Duration: Three days and two nights

For many students, this is their first overnight Outdoor Education experience at Metcalf. Throughout the trip, students participate in activities designed to challenge, support, and encourage them as they grow both individually and as members of their school community.

• Practice communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

• Learn practical outdoor and life skills.

• Develop a greater appreciation for the natural world.

Why is Outdoor Education Important?

Outdoor Education is more than a field trip—it's an extension of the Metcalf curriculum. The experience provides authentic opportunities for students to apply classroom learning while developing important life skills that prepare them for middle school, high school, and beyond.

Because Outdoor Education is an essential part of the 5th and 6th grade program, all students are expected to participate. Our goal is to ensure every student has a successful experience, and we work closely with families to provide any needed support or accommodations.
