STEM education is the primary mover to ensure the success of Industry Revolution 4.0 transformation (IR4.0). Despite of many efforts, the declining trends of student’s enrolment into STEM related fields has raised concern in Malaysia. Previous literatures suggested that current methods of implementing STEM education is not sufficient to attract student’s interest. One of commonly used methods to promote STEM education is robot-based activities. However, robot-based activities are limited and not fully promote application and exploration of new knowledge relevant what the students learned in class. Thus, exploration of a real-world problem solving is limited and centered around the capability of robotic system alone. This research intends to develop a new integrative STEM model based on mechatronics problem solving by (1) investigating information of related knowledge, skills and factors of interest of Form 1 to Form 3 secondary school students, (2) analyzing and selecting suitable concept of mechatronics problem solving as a new approach to integrative STEM and (3) developing a new integrative STEM by integrating knowledge, skills, factors of interest and mechatronics problem solving concept. A mixed quantitative and qualitative research method based on five phases will be used: (1) analysis of relevant secondary school STEM related syllabus, higher order thinking skills and factor of interest (2) design of integrative STEM model constructive elements through Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) and experts opinions, (3) development of integrative STEM model based on identified constructive elements by using Interpretive Structural Modelling (ISM), (4) pilot studies through questionnaires and (5) evaluation by experts. The expected outcome of this research is a new, comprehensive and practical model of an integrative STEM for secondary school. The significance of the research include: provide a new guideline for academia in implementing STEM education and in long-term ensuring sustainability of industry by supplying high skills workforces.
