Here are some injuries that we commonly see in the Athletic Training Room. Click on each to learn more about them.
What is an ankle sprain?
An ankle sprain is an injury to the ligament in your ankle. Sprains are very common in athletes, and can vary in severity. They are usually caused by a misstep during agility moves, or getting hit in the lower leg.
Treatment
The athletic trainers can provide treatments and rehabilitation for ankle sprains. Most of the time, we can treat an ankle sprain without having to send it to a physician, so we can limit the amount of time an athlete is sitting out due to injury. Make sure the athlete comes in for treatments in the morning so they can get taped for practice!
What is a concussion?
A concussion is a brain injury that can be caused by a direct or indirect blow to the head or body. Concussions can cause many different signs and symptoms, including headache, dizziness, trouble concentrating, blurred vision, and feeling off balance (to name a few). Concussions should not be ignored, and can lead to more serious injuries if left untreated.
Treatment
If a concussion is suspected, the athletic trainer should be notified. They will do an evaluation and determine the next steps. Once diagnosed with a concussion, they will begin the MISD Concussion Protocol. This involves being seen by a physician, graded symptom checks, passing a neurocognitive exam, return to learn protocol, and a return to play protocol.
What is patellar tendonitis?
Patellar tendonitis is inflammation of the tendon below your kneecap. It is usually caused by repetitive running or jumping.
Treatment
The athletic trainers can provide stretches and exercises to get the athlete back to feeling better. There is also a way that we can tape it to help relieve some pain for practices. Make sure the athlete is coming in for treatments in the morning!
What are shin splints?
Shin splints is a generic term for pain in the front of your lower leg. There are a lot of different causes to shin splints. The pain can come and go depending on activity level, or it can be constant. One of the more common causes is improper footwear. Having tennis shoes that fit properly and are not too old is a great way to prevent shin splints!
Treatment
The athletic trainers can provide stretches and exercises, as well as taping before their practice. Make sure the athlete comes in for treatments in the morning so they can get taped for practice!
