Word Study

Word Study Homework

Students are given a new spelling sort each week, based on the pattern they learn on Monday. They will be assessed on the learned pattern on Friday of the same week. Below are instructions for each night of word study homework. Please remember to have students reuse their plastic bags each week.

Monday: Written Sort

  • Sort words into categories like the ones practiced in class. To do this, put the headings at the top of the work area.
  • Pick one word from the bag at a time, read it aloud, and then place it under its matching heading.
  • Read the sort aloud to an adult.
  • Now copy the sort into your Words Their Way notebook.
  • Place all words back in the bag and keep them in a safe place. The same words will be used throughout the week.

Remember to have your child explain out loud, why the words are sorted in a particular way.

Tuesday: grammar or affix study

Wednesday: grammar or affix study

Thursday: Blind Typing Sort

  • An adult should pick one word out of the bag, one at a time, and read it aloud to the student. The student must indicate where the word goes without seeing it. Next, the adult should lay the word down and allow the student to evaluate if their choice was correct.
  • After all words have been sorted in this way and put into their correct categories, the student should type their sort using Google Docs and upload the document into Google Classroom.
