Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I rent an instrument?
Instruments can be rented at any local music store or through our district-approved vendor, NEMC. We currently have a representative from NEMC (nemc.com) who visits us weekly for instruments that need service or repairs. Below are the locations of other local stores that will rent string instruments:
MUSIC & ARTS CENTER
100 US Highway 9 Suite 2
Manalapan, NJ 07726-3017
Phone: (732)-414-6250
FREEHOLD MUSIC CENTER
3681 US Hwy 9 N
Freehold, NJ 07728
Phone: (732) 462-6860
*It is not recommended to purchase an instrument from Amazon or Ebay. The quality is often poor which results in frustration from the student, difficulty in staying in tune and over-all poor performance.
What options do I have if I cannot afford the yearly/monthly rental fee?
There are a limited number of school-owned instruments that students can apply for and use for free. Students must qualify to receive this offer. If instruments are not all assigned, students can ask for the use of an instrument and they will be granted on a first-come, first-serve basis. These instruments MUST be returned at the end of the year.
Students may borrow a sibling's instrument if not currently being used. Check with family members and neighbors for instruments that are no longer being used.
Are there lessons on half days?
Yes. All lessons are shortened to accommodate the shortened day.
Are there lessons on a delayed opening?
Yes. All lessons will be fit into the remainder or the day.
What if my child misses his/her music lesson?
If your child misses a music lesson, please email Mrs. Blick to get the new assignment. It is expected that every student comes prepared to each lesson, regardless of any missed lessons.
What does my child need for lessons?
Your child needs an instrument which will be brought to school on lesson day and brought back home to practice. The following book is also required:
ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS
Book 1 (6th grade)
Book 1 & 2 (7th & 8th grade)
It is highly recommended that a music stand is purchased for at-home practice. One can be purchased at a local music store or online, similar to this:
Students who have played for one year or more will be asked to purchase a shoulder rest instead of using the sponge that is provided the first year.(http://www.kunrest.com/)
MEMS Students should also have their own personal tuner, similar to this one:
