Writing

Writing is utilized in a variety of ways to practice the skills learned and develop a love of writing.

Writer's Workshop

Our writer's workshop is modeled after the Teacher's College Writing Project. It is designed to help students meet or exceed rigorous standards.

The units of study for the year are:

    • Personal Narratives (Small Moments)
    • Informational Writing
    • Opinion Writing
    • Fictional Narratives

Journal Writing

Students will be given a daily writing prompt to practice writing skills. This is also used to practice capitalization, punctuation, and previously learned spelling patterns, "No Excuse Words", and vocabulary. Sometimes children will use their journal writing time for free writing where they will be able to write about anything they wish.

Work on Writing (Daily 5)

This is another tool used to allow your child to practice applying writing skills, capitalization, punctuation, and previously learned spelling patterns, "No Excuse Words", and vocabulary. Writing activities may include: making lists, writing letters/postcards, creating stories, using vocabulary words in context, responding to task cards or prompts, etc.

Responding to Text

Sometimes children will be asked to respond to a text in writing. This is done during whole class read alouds or in small reading groups. This allows your child practice applying writing skills, capitalization, punctuation, and previously learned spelling patterns, "No Excuse Words", and vocabulary as well as a variety of comprehension strategies.
