Daily 5

  • Literacy structure that teaches independence
  • Students spend more time actually reading
  • The Daily 5 tasks are comprised of:
      1. Read to Self - Become a better reader by practicing each day, with books “Good Fit” books.
      2. Work on Writing - Become a better writer is by writing each day.
      3. Read to Someone - work on fluency & expression, check for understanding
      4. Word Work - Expands vocabulary, improves spelling and increases fluency
      5. Listen to Reading – Expands vocabulary, builds stamina and helps you become a better reader!

Making Meaning

    • Combines the latest comprehension research with support for students’ social and ethical development.
    • Uses nonfiction and fiction read-aloud books to teach students different comprehension strategies while they learn to read and think at a high level.
    • Students work together, appreciate each others ideas, disagree respectfully, and take responsibility for their own learning and behavior.

Project Read

A research-based language arts program that provides “lessons built on direct concept teaching, targeted multisensory (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile) strategies, and higher-level thinking skills.”

Small Reading Groups

Small groups are based on reading level and/or comprehension or decoding strategy (tailored to a child’s individual needs)

During reading groups we work on:

      • Fluency
      • Sight Words for Reading
      • Vocabulary

Reading Group Homework

Books are sent home to reread and practice retelling the story with a grown up and MUST be brought back the next day

**Remember reading is not just being able to say the words on the page; it is about understanding and thinking about what the book says.**

RAZ-KIDS

A reading website with hundreds of animated leveled books. Students can listen to books for modeled fluency, read books with pronunciation and vocabulary support, record their reading, and take a quiz to check for comprehension.
