This cycle we will be looking at a variety of different styles of art aiming to get a sampling of as many things as we can in the time that we have. This could include realistic still life drawing, Oaxacan animal designs from Mexico, sculpting Native American Kachina Dolls, traditional Japanese Sumi-e ink painting, Art Nouveau architecture from Spain, and more.
Question: "What supplies do I need to get for Art class this year?"
I know this is the first thing a lot of parents ask when it comes to art, so let's just get this out of the way now. The only art supply students need to bring to my class is a pencil. That's it! All the supplies that we will be using will be provided in class, so no worries!
The first thing we do in art is to create our own personalized sketchbook. Our sketchbooks will be an ongoing collection of drawings, notes, and short responses that we will work on daily. Near the end of the cycle this sketchbook will be graded on the completed classwork.
All students will be creating digital artist portfolios in art this year to collect and showcase their completed artwork. Students will be taking photographs of their artwork in class and writing short artist statements about each piece of art they create.
We use Google Classroom as our "digital classroom" where I will share information throughout the cycle related to our class. Each cycle has their own class with a unique code to join that will be given out at the beginning of the cycle and will be updated frequently throughout the weeks of art class.
Every Friday during art we take a short break in the beginning of class from our current project to take a look at a new contemporary artist who is just starting to be successful in the art world right now, as opposed to the variety of historic artists that students have often studied up to this point. We will watch a short video clip or look at a few quick artwork examples to see just how different and unique brand new artwork can be, and to have some exposure to the contemporary art world.
