Middle School Art
In art class, middle grades will expand on the elementary foundation in understanding and skills in the visual arts. Students will gain an appreciation for the arts by learning to create, respond, present, and form connections with art. Curriculum in each course includes an introduction to artists, art techniques, and a variety of media involving various art forms. Students will acquire increasingly complex procedural knowledge, develop more sophisticated aesthetic judgment, and form a broader knowledge and understanding of our diverse historical and cultural heritage through art.

6th Grade Art-MMS 6th Grade-1 Semester Course
This course meets every day for one semester. Students will explore a variety of media as they continue to build creative problem solving skills. Students will develop a basic art vocabulary, primarily focusing on the elements of art (color, line, shape, value, texture, space, and form), and gain an appreciation for the arts. A strong focus will be on improving creative thinking while exploring a better understanding of what makes visual art interesting. The four strands of art education will be emphasized: art appreciation, art history, art production, and art criticism.
Course Requirements:
Sketchbook requirements to develop creative ideas and drawing skills
Art vocabulary
Projects completed and handed in for a grade on a timely basis
Artist statements completed with projects reflecting on process
Maintaining an organized art folder that holds all handouts, critiques and grades
MMS Art I 7th/8th Grade-Semester Course
This course meets every day for one semester. Students focus on further developing creative thinking and problem solving skills, technical art skills, vocabulary, creativity, concepts of design, building and expanding on knowledge from 6th Grade Art. Students will take new steps towards creating more ‘mature’ works of art.The artistic Principles of Design will begin to be introduced (balance, rhythm, pattern, emphasis, contrast, unity and movement). The four strands of art education will continue to be emphasized: art appreciation, art history, art production, and art criticism.

MMS Art II 8th Grade-Year Long Course
This course meets every day for two semesters. Students will learn to express themselves creatively through a wider variety of media in this course that expands on the knowledge and skills acquired in 6th Grade Art and Art 1. Content is partially choice-based, which gives students more opportunity to take ownership of their artistic experiences from conception to completion. Composition, technique, attention-to-detail, and the Elements of Art and Principles of Design are explored. The four strands of art education will continue to be emphasized: art appreciation, art history, art production, and art criticism.

The art fee is used to cover entry costs to various art exhibits
The following supplies do NOT have to be new, and can be used in OTHER CLASSES:
Box of 12 or more Crayola Colored Pencils
Basic Cardboard Folder with two pockets
Pencils, basic #2 or mechanical
Large pink or white vinyl eraser
Ball point pens in blue or black (if you want, for creative purposes additional colors/types are OK)
Pencil Bag - to hold students art room required supplies.
Spiral bound sketchbook, 9” X 11” – a partially used sketchbook is fine
OR-A separate pocket folder with photo copy paper
