Natura Viva

Nicolás Cortés Gallery, Madrid

June - July 2021

The ‘Natura Viva’ exhibition examined the connection between humans and the animal kingdom, presenting a selection of works ranging from the Baroque period to contemporary art. Through animalistic scenes, the show conveyed respect for nature and highlighted the importance of preserving our biosphere. Organized in collaboration with the Spanish Ornithological Society (SEO/BirdLife), an NGO dedicated to the conservation and study of birds, biodiversity, and their habitats, the exhibition supported their crucial work in stopping the destruction of ecosystems that affected protected or declining species, such as certain ducks native to the Iberian fauna, which are especially at risk.

Among the old masters, the Baroque works of Tomás Yepes and Juan van der Hamen y León were particularly notable, representing the animalistic tradition of the 16th and 17th centuries. Meanwhile, contemporary artists such as Saverio Polloni, Alwin van der Linde, Guiomar Álvarez de Toledo, Myriam Álvarez de Toledo, María Carrión, and Juan Varela offered new perspectives.
