137 students from Louisa-Muscatine, Central Lee, Columbus, Holy Trinity, West Burlington, Wapello, New London, Pekin, Notre Dame, Danville, Highland, Lone Tree, WACO, and Mediapolis made up the very first SEISC Junior High Honor Band. The event was held at Wapello. The guest Conductor was Dr. Carl Rowles who is the Director of Bands at Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Eleven Mediapolis Middle School students were selected and attended the 5th Annual Clear Creek Amana Middle School Honor Band on Saturday, February 22nd, 2025. Students attended rehearsals starting at 10 AM and performed a concert at 4 PM in the Clear Creek Amana Performing Arts Center in Tiffin, IA. The 6th Grade Band was directed by Mrs. Michelle Waymire who currently teaches at Vernon Middle School in Marion. The 7th Grade Band was conducted by Mrs. April Donlon who is one of the band directors at North Central Middle School. The 8th Grade Band was directed by Mr. Kevin Brown who teaches at Northwest Junior High in the Iowa City School District. Congratulations to all the participants on an excellent concert!

Lily Nalley (flute, 10), Samantha Parsons (clarinet, 9), and Adrian Matteson (clarinet, 12) were selected to attend the 2025 Northern Festival of Bands at UNI. Students arrived in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Thursday, February 13th and had rehearsals through Saturday morning with a concert at noon on Saturday, February 15th at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. Nalley and Parsons performed with the Concert Band that was directed by Nora Tycast who is the current band director at Hopkins High School in a suburb of Minneapolis, MN. Matteson performed with the Wind Orchestra that was directed by Miguel Etchegoncelay who was originally from Argentina, but now lives in France and currently teaches at the Strasbourg Music Conservatory.
On Saturday, January 11, 2025 three Mediapolis students went through a vigorous audition process for the opportunity to be selected into the 2025 Southeast Iowa Bandmasters Association Honor Band. 7th grade students, Emma Thomas (percussion) and Kamdyn Wagenbach (clarinet), were selected into the junior high honor band. 9th grade student, Audrey Howe (flute), was selected as an Alternate and will be performing with the high school honor band. The honor band will take place on January 25th at the University of Iowa music building. Junior High Concert will begin at 4:30 PM and High School Concert will begin at 6PM.
SEIBA Honor Band Concert in the Voxman Music Building Concert Hall
On Saturday, October 26, 2024, 4,210 of Iowa's finest high school musicians (representing 261 of Iowa's high schools) auditioned to be a part of Iowa's All-State Music Festival. From the total number auditioning, 602 were selected for the chorus, 276 for the band, and 214 for the orchestra. Mediapolis senior, Adrian Matteson, was accepted into the 2024 Iowa All-State Band for the second year in a row. Adrian Matteson, son of Tyler and Nicole Matteson, attended rehearsals in the Hilton Coliseum on November 21-23 in preparation for the concert at 7:30 PM on Saturday, November 23rd. The band was directed by Dr. Rebecca Phillips who is the Director of Bands at Colorado State University. The concert will be available for viewing on Iowa PBS Thursday, November 28 at 7:00 PM and Sunday, December 8 at 1:00 PM.
On April 27, 2024, 5 Mediapolis 5th and 6th grade students attended the Southeast Iowa Bandmasters Association Elementary Honor Band at Iowa City West High School. The 1st year band was directed by Stephanie Nuss (currently teaches in Linn Mar School District) and the 2nd year band was directed by Kevin Brown (currently teaches in the Iowa City School District). Mediapolis was one of 23 schools in Southeast Iowa participating. Congratulations to the below students on an excellent performance!

On April 13, 2024, six Mediapolis 5th Grade students attended the Coe College Elementary Honor Band which is a part of Coe College's Festival of Bands. Every year, Coe invites a composer to come work with musicians of all age levels. The composer works with elementary, junior high, high school, and college musicians during their time in Iowa. This year's composer was Carol Brittin Chambers. The students also worked with Mrs. Valerie Shanley throughout the day. At the end of a long day of rehearsals, the students put on a concert at 4 pm in the Sinclair Auditorium.

The Iowa Jazz Championships showcases 60 of the state's finest high school jazz ensembles. It is held in Ames every April and features 15 groups from each of the four Iowa high school classifications. All ensembles perform in the daytime preliminary competition, and the top two bands from each classification perform in the evening finals competition. The event was founded by Iowa jazz educators in 1976 and continues to be an important event on the Iowa high school music landscape each spring.
Mediapolis Woodwind Choir
On Saturday April 6, the Mediapolis Music Department hosted the Iowa High School Music Association's State Solo and Small Ensemble Festival. There were 7 schools bringing their students to perform solos, or groups of up to 24 performers.
The Vocal Department had 9 entries perform that day. Of those 9 events 2 received Division I's, 5 received Division II's and 2 received Division III's. Events that received a Division I rating include Maximus Stucker-Williamson - Vocal Solo and Carley Petersen - Vocal Solo. Events that received a Division II rating include Alexis Creelman - Vocal Solo, Allison Nalley - Vocal Solo, Vocal Duet (Anneliese Shaw, Taylor McCracken), Mediapolis Mixed Quartet, Mediapolis Mixed Ensemble. Events that received a Division III rating include Vocal Duet (Leo Chapin, Kylian McGuinty), Vocal Duet (Makenna Hein, Emily Curran).
The Band Department had 28 entries perform that day. Of those 28 events 23 received Division I Ratings from their judges and 5 events received Division II's. In addition, Jesse Massner was selected as the Outstanding Performer for his Piano Solo AND for his Tuba Solo. Jesse will perform in Ames in May at the Iowa High School Music Association's Outstanding Performer Showcase.
On Thursday, March 21st, thirteen Mediapolis High School Band students attended the Southeast Iowa Superconference High School Honor Festival at Columbus. At 6:30 that evening, they performed the following pieces: Encanto by Robert W. Smith, New Forest March by Vinson, Affirmation by Standridge, Prospect by Pierre La Plante, and Jungle Dance by Balmages.

On Saturday, February 17th, eleven Mediapolis band students travelled to Tiffin, Iowa to perform alongside other band students from schools all across Eastern Iowa. There were three different bands - split by grade level. The 6th Grade Band was conducted by Mr. Steve King, the 7th Grade Band was conducted by Mrs. Jane Triplett, and the 8th Grade Band was conducted by Mr. Eric Lins. The day concluded with a concert at 4:00pm. Congratulations to these students on an excellent performance!

Mediapolis students - Lily Nalley (9), flute; Alyssa Haynie (12), horn; and Tucker McLaughlin (12), tenor saxophone - traveled to Iowa State University to learn and perform at the 48th Annual Cyclone Honor Band Festival. Students began rehearsals on February 2 in preparation for their concert at 3:00 PM on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at the beautiful Stephens Auditorium. Nalley and McLaughlin were members of the Cardinal band which was conducted by James Tallman from Washington Community High School (IL). Haynie performed wiht the Gold band which was composed of 90% Iowa All-State musicians. They were conducted by Dr. Frederick Speck who is a professor at University of Louisville.
On January 6, 2024, 5 Mediapolis students auditioned for the Southeast Iowa Bandmasters Association Honor Band. This audition is the same style of audition as the All-State audition that happens in the fall except now 7th and 8th grade students can audition for one of the two junior high bands as well. Among the accepted students from all over this corner of the state were two Mediapolis students. Alyssa Haynie (12th) was accepted on horn as well as Audrey Howe (8th) on flute. In addition, Noah Smith (10th) was selected as 2nd alternate for horn. Haynie and Howe participated in the honor band on Saturday, January 20th at the beautiful Voxman Music Building at the University of Iowa. SEIBA brought in the composers Aaron Perrine and Joni Greene to work with the high school bands. The high school band premiered two pieces and all four pieces performed were no older that 9 months. What an excellent opportunity for the students. Congratulations on all of your hard work!
On October 21st, 5 Mediapolis students auditioned for the Iowa All-State Music Festival. Over 1500 students throughout the state auditioned for the 332 openings in this year's festival. This audition is rigorous including memorizing 13 scales, preparing two challenging etudes, and preparing a solo. Adrian Matteson (11), son of Tyler and Nicole Matteson, was selected as a 1st Clarinet in the Iowa All-State Band. On November 16-18, Matteson attended rehearsals at the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, IA. On the last day, the Iowa All-State Orchestra, Band, and Choir performed a concert for the public. This year, the band was directed by Travis J. Cross, professor of music and director of bands at UCLA. With tradition, the concert ended with the band and choir performing The Battle Hymn of the Republic together.
On Saturday, April 29th, four Mediapolis 5th Grade Band students travelled to Liberty High School for the Southeast Iowa Bandmasters Association Elementary Honor Band. Students from 19 different schools in the area attended this event. The 1st year band was conducted by Beth Frenchick who teaches 5th grade and 6th grade band in the Mason City Community School District. At 4:00 PM, the students put on a concert where they performed five songs. Congratulations!

On Saturday, February 18, fifteen Mediapolis Middle School Band members attended a middle school honor band at Clear Creek Amana in Tiffin, Iowa. Students started rehearsals at 10:00 AM and rehearsed throughout the day until the concert at 4:00 PM. The 6th Grade Band was directed by Mr. Kevin Makinster who has been a band director in the Linn-Mar school district since 1992. The 7th Grade Band was directed by Ms. Leah Schmidt who is the high school band director at Wiliamsburg, and the 8th Grade Band was directed by Mrs. Valerie Shanley, the band director at Taft Middle School in Cedar Rapids, IA. The bands were made up of selected students from 28 schools in Southeast Iowa.

Six Mediapolis students attended the Northern Festival of Bands on February 9th through the 11th. Adrian Matteson (10), clarinet; Isaac Smith (9), trumpet; Noah Smith (9), french horn, and Maximus Stucker-Williamson (10), clarinet performed with this year's concert band directed by Linda Huck. Mrs. Huck is a retired band director from Farmington, Missouri who has received numerous awards in the music education field. Savannah Kerr (11), baritone saxophone and Tucker McLaughlin (11), tenor saxophone performed in the Symphony Band under direction of Reginald Adrian McDonald. Dr. McDonald is the current Director of Bands at Tennessee State University. The concert for this event was held in the beautiful Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center at the University of Northern Iowa on Saturday, February 11th at 2:00 pm.
On January 7th, seven Mediapolis students attended SEIBA Honor Band auditions at Fairfield High School. Students memorized scales and prepared advanced etudes for the audition. Mediapolis students - Audrey Howe (7th), Flute; Lily Nalley (8th), Flute; Macy Wagenbach (8th), Flute; Isaac Smith (9th), trumpet; and Adrian Matteson (10th), clarinet were recalled. Lily Nalley (8th), Flute; Macy Wagenbach (8th), Flute; Adrian Matteson (10th), clarinet; and Alyssa Haynie (11th), horn were selected to attend the honor band on January 21st.
The SEIBA Honor Band Festival/Concert was in the Voxman Music Building at the University of Iowa. The directors for the day were from the U of I including a U of I doctoral student, Mr. Cory Schmitt who conducted the Mortiboy Junior High Band; the Associate Director of Bands and Hawkeye Marching Band Director, Dr. Eric W. Bush who conducted the Voxman Junior High Band; and the Director of Bands, Dr. Richard Mark Heidel who conducted the High School Band.

On April 30, 2022 three 6th grade Mediapolis students attended The Southeast Iowa Bandmasters Association Elementary Honor Band at Liberty High School in North Liberty, IA. The 2nd Year Band was directed by Jane Triplett who is in her third year of retirement from a 35-year teaching career as a band director in Iowa. Students had practices starting at 10:00 AM that morning and finished the day with a concert at 4:30 PM.
Mediapolis 5th grade students - Laynie Frank (flute), Truett Larson (trombone), Sam Luebbers (trumpet), Jude Schmidgall (trombone), and Brock Wagg (tuba) performed at Coe College's Festival Bands on Saturday, April 9th. The Elementary Honor Band consisted of 102 selected 5th grade students from 39 different Iowa band programs. Coe College always brings in a composer to guest conduct all of the bands in the festival. This year the composer was James Swearingen. The elementary honor bands also worked with Amy Kraeplin from Boulder Peak Intermediate School in the Linn-Mar School District.

On Saturday, February 19, Mediapolis 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students attended an honor band at Clear Creek Amana in Tiffin, IA. This band was made up of selected students from schools are around Eastern Iowa. Students spent the whole day rehearsing and finished the day with a concert at 5:00 pm. The director of the 6th grade band was Mrs. Ashley Knobloch who teaches at North Scott Junior High in Eldridge, IA. Mr. Mike Kowbel directed the 7th and 8th grade band. He is the Assistant Director of Bands at City High School in Iowa City, IA.

MEPO Students Attended the Northern Festival of Bands
Mediapolis students - Alyssa Haynie (10), Horn, Adrian Matteson (9), Clarinet; and Maximus Stucker-Williamson (9), Clarinet performed with the Concert Band at the Northern Festival of Bands in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Students attended three days of rehearsals prior to a concert on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at 2:00 PM. Over three hundred students from music programs in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin attended the event. The Concert Band was directed by Thomas Bankert who is the director of the Wakefield (MA) High School Band Program.

On January 8th, Mediapolis brought 7 students to audition for the SEIBA Honor Band. This demanding and strenuous audition included performing major scales and upper level etudes for an adjudicator. Lily Nalley, Flute; Isaac Smith, Trumpet; and Macy Wagenbach, Flute were accepted into the 2022 SEIBA Honor Band. Isaac Smith was named one of the trumpet alternates for the IBA 8th Grade All-Iowa Band. The concert will be on January 22nd at 4:30 PM at Clear Creek Amana High School in Tiffin, IA. Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $4 for students/senior citizens.
