Science Summer Work

MVMMS Science

Science 6

    • Students can use www.typing.com and log in with their school Google accounts. Progress will be monitored, but be sure to log in with your account before going to the site! There are 4 levels of drill/skill practice (beginner, intermediate, advanced and practice). Students can skip the Dvorak keyboard practice and begin the practice tab with keyboard quadrants. The games tab at the top allows the user to select an area of the keyboard that they want to practice and a degree of complexity as well.
    • Design and create a pendulum that can drip water through a cup on its end. Try to slide a long piece of paper under the dripping cup as it swings back and forth. You will get an image of a wave on your paper! Try out this experiment and let me know your results with pictures, questions, or results!

Science 7

    • Take an inventory of the plants on your property. How has your landscape changed? Design an experiment to minimize the usage of water and energy for your plants, while still maintaining conditions for seed germination and growth.

Science 8

    • You are modeling work that a local insurance company requires as they are concerned about monetary coverage for oceanfront property locations. Students are encouraged to design a device or an experiment to measure relationships between tides, seasons, and climate, and why that data is useful in this scenario. Be creative!

MHS Science

Students enrolled in AP Courses at MHS will be asked to perform summer work in order to meet the demands and time requirement for these rigorous offerings. As summer work files are loaded to our system, they will be added to the website.

AP Biology - We will be using the FlinnPrep program to complete work and track performance. Your teacher will provide you with login and access codes.

AP Chemistry - We will be using the FlinnPrep program to complete work and track performance. Your teacher will provide you with login and access codes.

AP Environmental Science - Please email nnaslas@melroseschools.com and stroy@melroseschools.com if you missed the required meeting for summer work.

AP Physics 1 - Please email dcarbonneau@melroseschools.com if you missed the required meeting for summer work.

AP Physics C - You need to enroll in the edX course On-Ramp to AP Physics C: Mechanics. There is no charge for the course unless you want a certificate and you do not need a certificate. Be an active participant and do all the activities in the course, this should take 10-15 hours. I would suggest spreading it out over the summer. At the beginning of school in the fall you will need to pass in screen shots showing your progress overall and in each section. Your average in the course will be applied to both a quiz grade and a homework grade to begin the year. Good Luck and email me if you have questions or concerns. bcochran@melroseschools.com Mr.C

Summer work is not required for students at the secondary level, however optional assignments are being developed for the next course they will be pursuing. Students are encouraged to contact the department director regarding any of this summer work to continue the conversation. Please check back frequently for updates!
