Notan Designs

Notan is a Japanese word that means “light-dark balance.” A Notan usually uses just black and white to express a composition that is reduced to basic shapes. They can be abstract or representational.

Graffiti tags

Kierin

The three elements of graffiti helped us learn about the first three elements of art. In graffiti, works evolve as tags, throws, and pieces which connect to line, shape, and form. Fifth graders learned one-point perspective, overlap, and depth in space through The study of graffiti lettering . We used drawing techniques and color theory as well as gradation.

Identity maps

Students learned to express aspects of themselves using an imaginary map and colored pencils as their medium. They created an island with land and water features named for aspects of their identity. We began by dyeing paper with tea, coffee or watercolor paint to make it look old. Students then used the colored pencils techniques they learned to add color and detail.

Picasso Inspired Portraits

Pablo Picasso, “Femme au Béret et à la Robe Quadrillée (Marie-Thérèse Walter)” , 1937.

To start off our portrait unit, we took a look at the work of Pablo Picasso. In his work, he wanted to emphasize the difference between a painting and reality. Picasso tried different ways of seeing, or perceiving, using both his observations and his memories when creating a Cubist image. Inspired by his work, we challenged ourselves to change our perspective to create cubist portraits.

Split Portraits

Facial proportions

We moved on to the realistic portion of our portraits unit. In order to complete our split portraits, we learned the proportions of the face (for a 12 year old) and different techniques for drawing eyes, noses and mouths.

Collage Animals

This project was a progressive, multi step, multi media project that really evolved as students created it! They used all of the skills and techniques that they learned this year in order to complete this work, emphasizing that art is a process and not just a product that we create.

Jen Stark Inspired Collaborative Mural

Jen Stark is a Los Angeles based artist known for her psychedelic, brightly colored public murals, many of which feature layers of drip-like forms. For this project, students created single drip paintings, which were then collaged into a bigger collaborative mural. They also practiced their watercolor techniques and knowledge of color theory to create their own color schemes.
