Reading
Our Reading Units this year are Theme-based. Each unit is 6 weeks in length and includes a culminating project.
Unit 1 Networks
Unit 2 Adaptations
Unit 3 Diversity
Unit 4 Impacts
Unit 5 Features
One of my goals is for students to learn to enjoy reading, so I encourage all types of reading: chapter books, picture books (even reading aloud to a sibling!), graphic novels, comics, audio books (in moderation), or online articles. That being said, I may have a few times per year that I ask for a specific type of book (for example, realistic fiction). This is usually because it coincides with our writing genre and gives students a great text model.
If your student needs to work on fluency, a great tip is to take turns reading aloud once/week with your student. That way, he/she is hearing fluent reading modeled, and getting in some additional practice.
