SEL Lesson Topics and Activities
Lesson 1: Zones of Regulation
In this lesson, we learned about the Zones of Regulation. This is a concept that helps us name our feelings and calm down. Watch this video to learn more: What are the Zones of Regulation?
Ask:
"What zone are you in?"
"What is the best zone to be in?"
Practice:
Ask your child to show you one strategy they would use to get back to the green zone!
Lesson 2: Listening and Following Directions
In this lesson, we learned how to listen with our whole body and follow directions the first time. We use this song to help us understand and practice listening.
Ask:
"What should your ears/eyes/voice/body do while you are listening?"
"When should we follow a grown-up's direction?"
Practice:
Play a game of Simon Says to practice listening. Make sure the littles get a chance to be Simon, too!😉
Lesson 3: "Reset" when you are Upset
In this lesson, we learned about noticing when our body feels sad, angry, tired, etc. It is important to listen to those signals and use a "reset", or calm-down, strategy to help us feel better. This video does a great job teaching us how to notice upset feelings, and reset.
Ask:
"How do you know when you need to reset?"
"What is your favorite calm-down strategy?"
Practice:
Watch this read aloud and ask your child to touch their nose when they see a calming strategy they use. Bonus - can you try some or ALL of the strategies in this book?
Lesson 4: Review of Lessons 1-3
Challenge 1 - Zones of Regulation: Read your favorite book or turn on your favorite show. Point out the Zone that each character is in. Can you find all 4 zones?
Challenge 2 - Listening and Following Directions: Play a game of Guess That Sound. For each sound you guess correctly (while listening with your whole body!), you earn 1 point. How many points did you earn?
Challenge 3 - Reset when Upset: Jump around the living room, notice your quick heartbeat, then set a timer for 1-3 minutes. Spend that time blowing bubbles, squeezing playdough, coloring, etc. After the timer goes off, feel your heartbeat again. Did it get slower? Why?
Lesson 5: Sharing
In this lesson, we learned about the importance of sharing. This read aloud helps us understand why and how you should ask before taking something away from a friend.
Ask:
Fill in the blank - "Before you take something away, stop and ________ if it's OK!" (ask)
"What do you do if a friend told you that they will give you the toy when they are done playing with it?"
Practice:
Listen to this sharing song and discuss ways that you share!
Lesson 6: Taking Turns
In this lesson, we discussed why it is important to take turns, and how to make waiting our turn easier. We practiced taking a deep breath to help us wait patiently, and watching our friends take their turn with a smile.
Ask:
"What should I do while I wait my turn?"
"How will my friends feel if I do not wait my turn?"
Practice:
Watch this interactive video and help Bella make the best choice!
Lesson 7: Stopping a Fun Activity
In this lesson, we learned about why it is important to stop an activity (like recess) when a grown-up tells us to, even if we do not want to. We talked about staying on schedule at school so we can get all of our jobs done.
Ask:
"Why is it important to listen to your grown-up at home when they tell you to stop an activity?"
"What can you do when stopping a fun activity makes you feel sad or angry?"
Practice:
Play a game like freeze dance. Practice stopping a fun activity (dancing), even if you don't want to!
Lesson 8: Review of Lessons 5-7
Challenge 1 - Sharing: Let's role play! Practice using your words to ask your friend/grown-up to share. Then, practice sharing your toys with your friend/grown-up.
Challenge 2 - Taking Turns: Play a board or card game. Practice waiting patiently for your turn. Take a deep breath if it becomes hard to wait!
Challenge 3 - Stopping a Fun Activity: Gather a few toys and place them at different spots around a room. Set a timer for 3 minutes. Every time the timer goes off, you must quickly clean up the toy you were using and move on to the next. Good luck!
Lesson 9: Review of Lessons 1-3
Challenge 1 - Zones of Regulation: Play this Guess the Emotion game. Pause and discuss which zone each feeling is in.
Challenge 2 - Listening and Following Directions: Grab a sheet of paper and some crayons. Your grown-up will give you one direction at a time (draw a yellow circle, color the ____ red, etc.). You must listen with your whole body and follow each direction right away!
Challenge 3 - Reset when Upset: Practice using breathing as a calm-down strategy with this video.
Lesson 10: Personal Space
In this lesson, we learned all about our personal space "bubbles". Our bubbles are the size of a hula hoop. We must stay inside our bubbles, and only pop someone else's bubble when we ask.
Ask:
"How will someone feel if you pop their bubble without asking?"
"What can you say when someone asks to pop your bubble?" (yes or no!)
Practice:
Watch this interactive video to practice respecting personal space!
Show your grown-up how to make your personal space bubble with your arms.
Lesson 11: Asking for Help
In this lesson, we talked about the size of our problems. Small problems are problems we can solve by ourself, like rebuilding a block tower that fell over. Big problems are problems we need help solving, like getting hurt or spilling juice all over the floor. In this case, we need to ask a grown-up for help.
Ask:
"How do you use kind words to ask for help?"
"Can you name a small problem? What about a big problem?"
Practice:
This is a song about asking for help.
Lesson 12: Accepting "No"
In this lesson, we learned about the "Say OK to No Club". To join this club, you have to say "OK" when you hear the word "No", even if it makes you upset!
Ask:
"What should I do if I feel upset when my grown-up tells me 'No'?"
Practice:
Join the " Say OK to No Club"! Practice saying "OK" when your grown-up tells you "No".
Lesson 13: Review of Lessons 10-12
Challenge 1 - Personal Space: Grab a hula hoop (or use your arms!) and a friend or grown-up. Practice sitting on the couch, playing with toys, and sharing a book. Use the hula hoop to check if you are respecting each others' personal space bubbles!
Challenge 2 - Asking for Help: Watch this video and help Bella decide the best way to solve her problem. Do you think Bella's problem is small or big?
Challenge 3 - Accepting "No": Grown-ups - grab a sticky note and add a tally each time your kiddo says "OK" to "No" in one day. You can even set a goal... 10 tallies = a treat, extra playtime, etc!
Lesson 14: Review of Lessons 5-7
Challenge 1 - Sharing: This quick video is a catchy song about sharing with friends.
Challenge 2 - Taking Turns: Sit down with as many friends or grown-ups as you'd like. One person starts with a ball. Play this video, and each time you hear the word "Turn", you must pass the ball to the next person!
Challenge 3 - Stopping a Fun Activity: Gather a few toys and place them at different spots around a room. Set a timer for 3 minutes. Every time the timer goes off, you must quickly clean up the toy you were using and move on to the next. Good luck!
Lesson 15: Review of Lessons 1-3
Challenge 1 - Zones of Regulation: Play Name that Emotion with Elmo. After naming the feeling, name what Zone each character is in!
Challenge 2 - Listening and Following Directions: Listen closely during this game to make sure you are following the direction only when you are supposed to!
Challenge 3 - Reset when Upset: Take a reset break outside. Go for a walk and name 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste!
Lesson 16: Celebration!
Review any and all activities above!
