About

Each month the DigiURI Media Club meet for an engaging discussion about a piece of media in any form—video, audio, text, etc.—related to the digital world, how it is changing our lives, and how we can best teach about it. Anyone can recommend a title for discussion and we encourage you host a discussion about the title of your choice.

This group started as a very small group of participants suggesting media to each other at the 2018 DigiURI Summer Institute and we have grown to more than 500. Care to join us?

FAQs

How do I get the meeting log in information?

To get the Zoom meeting information, sign up for the Club here and note the login details on the confirmation page. If you forget or lose the log in details, don't worry! If you're on the email list you will receive a reminder 30 minutes prior to the start of each meeting.

Why am I receiving emails about the DigiURI Media Club?

Everyone on the email list joins by completing and submitting the DigiURI Media Club sign up form, managed using Mail Chimp. Our events are publicized in NAMLE and Media Education Lab newsletters, along with Tweets from Renee Hobbs and other members, at media literacy events, and sometimes in the NAMLE newsletter. If you are on the email list and do not remember signing up, perhaps one of these publications sounds familiar! ;)

What information does your email list have about me?

The information submitted is limited to your name, email address, and or organization -- only what you submit on the sign-up form.

Do you share my email address or use it for any other purpose?

We don't use any other method aside from the voluntary form to collect email addresses, nor do we share email addresses for any other purpose. The list is completely contained and managed via a good old fashioned spreadsheet. Requests to email the Club with anything other than Club-related activities and topics are politely declined.

Can I contact members of the Club directly?

We encourage continued conversation about topics directly related to the Club or the media titles, themes, resources, etc. we discuss. However, please do not use the Club as a source for any other purpose. Let's keep this group safe by honoring the expectations we all had when we signed up!

How do I unsubscribe from the Club's email list?

Email samantha@mediaeducationlab.com and indicate your preference to be removed from the email list. Please note that you will no longer receive Zoom meeting information for discussion meetings.

Do you record meetings and are they posted publicly?

Yes, we do record each discussion meeting and post the video to our DigiURI Media Club YouTube playlist so that members who could not join live can still access the discussion. We use Zoom to gather online for meetings and participants have complete control over whether they appear on video, how their name appears on their participant window, and when their microphone is on or off (although sometimes we mute everyone except who is speaking just to limit background noise). We begin each meeting by announcing we are about to record.

Who hosts meetings?

The club is hosted by Michael Stöpel of the American University of Paris and by Samantha Stanley of the University of Hong Kong and the Media Education Lab. Each month we invite members of the club to lead the discussion so that we all have the opportunity to lead the conversation! Tech support will always be handled by Sam and Michael, so discussion leaders only need to enjoy the conversation. If you are interested in leading a discussion, let us know!
