PLEASE have your student(s) wear appropriate apparel for P.E. on days in which they will have P.E., especially shoes (no sandals, flats, boots, etc.). If a student does not have access to such shoes, please contact Coach Allen. He would love to help.
Throughout the year, students will learn different concepts in P.E. that pertain to their personal fitness, whether it relates to health or skills, through activities and measurements of each.
Changing direction quickly
Keeping safe position
Body parts working together
Ability to stretch
How long you can last
How much you can move
Speed plus strength
How fast you can go
In P.E., we constantly practice and eventually assess our skills in a large variety of ways, especially our most basic skills such as locomotor (moving) and nonlocomotor (not moving) skills as described below (locomotor skills are in developmentally appropriate order for most).
Walking, running, jumping, hopping, leaping, galloping, sliding, skipping, (carioca)
Balance, bend, curl, lift, push, pull, stretch, sway, swing, turn, twist
We also develop many manipulative skills (manipulating an object), as listed below.
Catch, dribble (feet or hands), kick, strike, throw, toss, twirl, volley
Students were asked in week 1 of P.E. what they thought it means to serve, learn, and lead in P.E. The answers were wonderful and we combined them together to make three characteristics for each word:
Safe, helpful, kind/respectful
Trying, listening, having fun
Helper, good example, 7 habit leader
As does all of Willard South Elementary, students in P.E. will learn (mostly through movement) with the 7 Habits of Leader in Me incorporated in activities. These habits are meant to teach students valuable concepts that help them be effective and successful people in any facet of life. The 7 Habits are as follows:
We will learn many other concepts throughout the school year, including the following:
Space (personal and general)
"Can't" to "Can try"
Growth mindset
Coach Allen will care for you and try his best to do what's best for you (we're a team)
