1st Quarter

The 1st Quarter:

METRIC MEASUREMENT, EXPERIMENTATION, and CHEMISTRY

MEASUREMENT~ Big Ideas

  • Metric Measurement helps scientists in experimentation and data collection, it is used globally in Science.

I can use metric measurement and accurate conversions in my lab experiments.

  • Density is a unit of measure used often in Science, particularly physics.

I can accurately use density and the formula D=m/v, to show the quantity of mass per unit volume.

EXPERIMENTATION ~ Big Ideas

  • Understand the different types of variables.

I can accurately and consistently identify dependent and independent variables.

  • Scientists use the scientific method to create experiments where they can collect data.

I can write a lab experiment and accurately identify all necessary components.

CHEMISTRY~ Big Ideas

  • Everything is made of elements.

  • Atoms have three subatomic parts: protons, neutrons, electrons.

  • The Periodic table helps us to make sense of elements.

  • Elements, Atoms, Molecules, Compounds and Bonding.

  • Matter takes different forms and can change forms due to energy gains or losses.

I can identify protons, neutrons and electrons in any given element.

I can make a model of compounds using atomic kits.

I can explain how atoms, molecules, compounds, and bonding are alike and how they are different.

I can conduct a chemical change experiment.
