Grade 1 Curriculum Overview

Math

Everyday Mathematics is grounded in an extensive body of research into how children learn. The design of Everyday Mathematics allows children to gain an understanding of mathematical concepts and a solid mathematical foundation. Some features of the program include a problem-solving approach based on everyday situations, a variety of formats for frequent practice of basic skills, a spiral concept of revisiting concepts and build on them, and a curriculum that explores mathematical content beyond basic arithmetic.

Literacy

Reading (Informational Text and Literature), Foundational Reading Skills, Writing, Speaking, Listening, Language!

First grade students will be introduced to a wide variety of texts.  They will ask and answer questions about key details in a text and distinguish between information provided by illustrations and information provided by words.  They will retell a story and identify reasons an author gives to support points.  Students apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.  Students will read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

In writing, first grade students will produce opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, and supply a reason for the opinion. In addition, they will write informative/explanatory texts in which they identify a topic, provide facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.  Students will also write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced events, include some details regarding what happened, and use temporal words to signal event order. Their stories will have a beginning, middle and end.

Additionally, the students will participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts.  They will engage with peers and adults in small and larger groups.  They will demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking and demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.

Social Studies

Leadership, Cooperation, Unity, and Diversity

Students learn about leadership on many levels, the meaning of citizenship, and map types. They explore how the concepts of unity and diversity, respect for differences, and respect of self shape life in the United States.  They will explore how people make choices about purchasing goods and services and saving resources.

SEL (Social emotional learning)

Most of our social emotional learning comes through play and interactions.  The guided programs we use include RULER and the Second Step Bullying Program.
