Interactive Science Notebooks - This is our first activity with students. They will setup and maintain their ISN's throughout the year. This will be where all their notes, and plans go. We have a limited number of textbooks, so we keep classroom sets and students may check one out if they need to take it home for the night. Most of their information to study for tests/quizzes, and directions for projects will all be in their notebook.
Ecosystems - Our first 7th grade science unit is a review of ecosystems. Many students studied this topic a little in elementary school, so it will be a quick review of the main ideas. We will focus on trophic levels and how small changes in an ecosystem can lead to big differences.
Cells - Our second unit is all about cells. We start by looking at cells through microscopes, then we move on to identifying all the parts of the cell and equating them to cities to show our understanding. Next we focus on photosynthesis and cellular respiration, cell division, and finally on genetics.
Genetics - This is our third unit. Students will learn about Gregor Mendel and his pea plants as well as exploring the larger ideas of genetically modified organisms, cloning, and gene therapy. We will start with an overview of what genetics is and focus on being able to predict genetic outcomes from crosses of traits.
Change Over Time - This is our evolution unit. We are going to extend our understanding of genetics to include things like mutations and how variations in a population can lead to changes in that population over time. This unit includes adaptation, variation, natural selection, and even a little bit about artificial selection.
