The California Hearing Conservation Program helps to identify hearing loss in preschoolers to 21 years of age in Public Schools. Students are routinely screened for educationally significant hearing difficulty in the following grades: transitional kindergarten (TK), kindergarten (K), 2nd grade, 5th grade, and 8th grade. Students in 10th grade with previously identified hearing loss, or students previously identified as needing follow up, are also screened. Staff or parents may request hearing screening, and students may self refer.
Hearing loss may be permanent, progressive, temporary, or reversible. All losses have medical and educational significance. As with any condition, the earlier the condition is discovered and addressed, the better the chance of successful treatment.
