Speaking : Retell a Narrative

Grade TK - Kindergarten

Look at the pictures. I'm going to tell you a story about the pictures.

One day Dan and his father wanted to go to the park. They packed some food and drinks.

When Dan and his father got to the park, they found a nice table by a tree. They unpacked their food and enjoyed eating lunch.

After they ate, Dan helped clear the table and picked up the wrappers. He put them in the trash can. He wanted to keep the park clean and beautiful.

Now use all the pictures to retell the story aloud.

Grade 1

Look at the pictures. I'm going to tell you a story about the pictures.

Paul was going fishing with his grandmother. He wanted to try the fishing pole she had given him.

At the lake they waited and waited for a fish to bite. Finally Paul felt something pulling on his line.

Paul caught his first fish. His grandmother measured the fish. She said it was too small to keep.

They put the fish back in the water and let it go. It swam away, and Paul hoped it would grow into a great big fish. Maybe he would see it again someday!

Now use all the pictures to retell the story aloud.

Grade 2

Look at the pictures. I'm going to tell you a story about the pictures.

Nae was a girl who loved to play soccer. One day her father gave her a brand new soccer ball as a gift.

Nae was very excited. She brought the ball to the park so she could practice.

When she arrived, she waved to the other kids to come and play with her. They started to play a game. Nae was very happy.

The best part of the game was when Nae kicked the ball into the goal. She scored the winning goal, and everyone cheered loudly

Now use all the pictures to retell the story aloud.

Grade 3 - 5

Look at the pictures. I'm going to tell you a story about the pictures.

Margie and her dad wanted to build a birdhouse. They went out to the garage to gather a pile of boards and some tools.

Margie held the boards while her father hammered the boards together using nails.

After the birdhouse was built, Margie and her father used brushes to paint and decorate it.

As soon as they hung the birdhouse in the tree, the birds came to see it.

Now use all the pictures to retell the story aloud.

Speaking : Summarize an Academic Presentation

Grade TK - Kindergarten

I am going to tell you about the rain forest. When I am finished, you will tell me about the rain forest.

This is a rain forest.

The rain forest is a very wet place. It may also be very hot.

Many kinds of plants and animals live in the rain forest.

Above the trees there is sunlight. Some animals live in the treetops and almost never come down.

On the floor of the rain forest it is dark and damp. Very little light gets through the tree leaves.

Tell me about the rain forest. Use the picture to help you.

Grade 1

I am going to tell you about forces. When I am finished, you will tell me about forces.

Pushing and pulling are forces. Forces make something or someone move. We use forces every day.

A push moves something away from you. Kicking a ball and rolling a toy car down a ramp are examples of pushing forces.

A pull moves something toward you. Zipping up a zipper or opening a drawer are examples of pulling forces.

Tell me about forces. Use the pictures to help you.

Grade 2

You are going to listen to some information about hibernation.

When the presentation ends, you will summarize the information you heard. You will

• explain hibernation,

• include all the examples you heard about, and

• use relevant details and clear language

Picture one shows a woodchuck. This woodchuck looks like it is just sleeping. But it is really hibernating. Hibernating means that the woodchuck finds a safe place and sleeps for the entire winter. Woodchucks hibernate in underground dens.

Picture two shows a bat. In winter, bats like to hibernate in dark places. They like to hibernate in caves. Caves provide a safe and warm place to rest. Bats hang upside down in caves when they are hibernating.

Picture three shows a bear. Bears hibernate for long periods of time in the winter. They hibernate because food is hard to find in the winter. So they eat a lot of food before they go to sleep, and then they hibernate for the winter.

Summarize the information you heard. Be sure to

• explain hibernation,

• include all the examples you heard about, and

• use relevant details and clear language.

Grade 3 - 5

You are going to listen to some information about the process of conductivity.

When the presentation ends, you will summarize the information you heard. You will

• explain conductivity,

• include all the steps in the demonstration, and

• use relevant details and clear language.

Have you ever wondered why electric plugs always have metal prongs, but the cords are covered in rubber or plastic? Today we’re going to talk about conductivity, or the way that electricity travels through different materials.

Look at picture one. It shows some batteries and a light bulb connected together in a simple circuit with some wires. The wires on one side of the circle are not touching, so the circuit is not complete. I will connect these two wires to different objects to test their conductivity.

When the two wires are connected to a rubber eraser, it makes a circle connecting the batteries and the light bulb. However, in picture two, you can see that the light bulb does not light up when rubber is used to complete the circuit. That’s because rubber is not a good conductor of electricity. The rubber blocks the electricity from completing its circuit.

Finally, the wires are attached to a piece of aluminum foil. Aluminum is a good conductor of electricity, so the electricity from the battery can pass through the foil, to the light, and back to the battery again, making a complete circuit. As you can see in picture three, the bulb lights up.

This demonstration shows how different materials conduct electricity. Metal is a much better conductor of electricity than rubber which is why electrical plugs have metal prongs. However, the outside of the plug is covered in rubber so that when we touch it, no electricity is conducted to us. Conductivity is an important idea in electrical engineering.

Summarize the information you heard. Be sure to

• explain conductivity,

• include all the steps in the demonstration, and

• use relevant details and clear language.
