In order to satisfy their assessment graduation requirement, students in the state of New Jersey must pass an assessment in English and Math; proficiency on these state assessments are determined by the state department of education.
On June 5, 2019, the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) updated the high school graduation assessment requirements in both English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA) and Mathematics for the classes of 2019 through 2022. The requirements listed for the classes of 2023–2025 were adopted by the New Jersey State Board of Education on September 8, 2021.
Neither federal nor state law provides parents with an option regarding participation in the tests. The federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires 95% of all students in grades 3 to 11 be tested annually.
