Get involved, explore, and commit to extracurricular activities and leadership opportunities.

Prepare for the Fall District ACT with Writing, which will be administered at MHS in October.
Review course descriptions and registration information. It will be sent to you in October, and you will meet with your counselor late October/early November to discuss your plan.
Make a list of potential colleges of interest.
Attend college fairs, college nights, and rep visits.
Speak to representatives from colleges that attend your high school.
Plan campus visits with college admission offices.
Plan for College Visits/Job Shadowing. Juniors have 2 College Visit/Job Shadow days to use during the school year. You must pick up a College Visit Day form in Student Services or the Main Office at least one day prior to the visit.
Start developing a résumé—a record of your accomplishments, activities, and work experience. This will be an important part of your college application.
Build relationships with your teachers, as they are the ones who you will most likely ask for a letter of recommendation

Stay involved with extracurricular and volunteer activities.

Set up appointments at your top college choices OR trade school, including a tour of the campus and meet with a professor/coach (Spring Break is a great time to visit!)
Start making summer plans to visit additional colleges and trade schools and begin to narrow choices. Try to include a visit to a large, medium, and small-sized campus.
Develop a preliminary list of colleges that interest you. Go online to request additional information.
Take a look at some college applications. Make note of application deadlines and all the pieces of information you will need to compile, including the requirements for the college essay.
Make a list of teachers, counselors, employers, and other adults who could write letters of recommendation.
Consider lining up a summer job or internship.
Work a summer job to gain experience, build a resume, and save money for college.
Consider retaking the ACT to improve your score.
