Reading and Writing:
Your child will be expected to read AT LEAST 20 minutes EVERY night. They should be reading books at their level so the reading is not too easy or too hard. All writing will be expected to reflect good writing skills that are required at school: correct capitals, spelling, and punctuation, with complete thoughts and sentences that make sense, and good handwriting, of course! There is a strong focus on all aspects of writing at school, including handwriting, and we will expect to see this in writing done at home as well. Reading logs are due on Friday.
Math:
Students will not have math homework, unless parents request it. Please practice math facts at home nightly as a nightly routine.
Growth Goals:
It is the goal of EVERY Northside student to make at least one year’s growth in reading and math during the school year, as measured on our various assessments throughout the year. You can help your child meet his or her reading and math goals by listening to them read at home every night and ask questions about what they read, and make sure they complete their writing about their book with correct writing skills, and make sure they are practicing math skills/facts at home and completing all math homework that is brought home. This will help increase fluency and comprehension in reading, and will help build writing skills, and help with mastery of math concepts.
Your child will learn science and social studies, which will be regularly integrated into reading and writing. Northside will continue as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) school this year. Students will work cooperatively with each other to complete STEM projects throughout the year and will continue our work with Problem Based Learning.
